Perfect symmetry at landfall.

I'm guessing maybe 170 or higher. Being conservative and still maybe on the low side. This thing just bomb out.

Okay, we were calling out the agencies for being conservative but this is certainly not a 170 kt system. I went with the higher side of SATCON, excluded outliers and I obtained ~160 kts. 160-165 kts would be the maximum. 170 kts is pure hyperbole.

The minimum pressure recorded by the Allacapan weather station was 945 mb at 2100 UTC. However, the sustained winds from the northeast at the time were still 51 kt (94 km/h) so it may have been a bit lower between the measurement times. At 2200 UTC, the NE-winds decreased to just 18 kt (33 km/h) but the pressure went back up to 959 mb. Either way, it looks like rapid weakening commenced immediately after landfall.

170 knots and still on the low side?! Yeah....no you're just over-exaggerating. Haiyan looked more impressive when it made landfall.

Not downplaying this storm though. Very impressive how it maintained its very strong intensity all the way to landfall. Least it made landfall over a mostly remote area.

Mighty impressive. Post analysis will be quite interesting when all said is done.

Looked very impressive here. 160-165 knots might be in the realm of possibility. Incredible storm nonetheless.

The most CDG was around 14 UTC:

You might in theory be able to argue 165 knots for this image ^ using the 1251UTC CIMSS AMSU 162 estimate as a benchmark since there is more CMG and CDG at 14 UTC vs 1250 UTC. I don't see how 170 knots could be possible though.

Has anyone heard from chasers Josh and James? It has been a few hours after I posted the last tweets from them.

Hi, sorry to bother everyone. It’s a busy time. Anyone willing to make an educated guess on how this will affect Hong Kong? I’m on a flight to Hong Kong as I type this! Thank you in advance!

Last I heard James' hotel was badly damaged. Josh has been MIA for quite a while. I think he took a direct hit from the N eyewall, so I'm willing to bet he won't have service for a bit.

Probably one of the strongest TC landfall in the world. If there was a Cat 6, this will be it. Explosive intensification before landfall.

Not surprising considering landfall and all.

But compared to Haima, this has performed so much better before and after landfall.

This is probably the largest storm that made landfall, never seen a typhoon hitting Northern Luzon but the effects were felt as far south as Cebu City and even Northern Mindanao.

Allapacan was actually quite SE to the eye. Right after landfall, Mangkhut's eye was very intact.

It was already a larger than average storm prior to the first big eyewall replacement cycle. Following it, Mangkhut also started to interact with the SW monsoon, which super sized it.
