That supports an intensity of 90 kt. The SFMR was all flagged there.

CAT3 threshold for flight level wind using standard deduction is typically around 110kt. Zeta should be there soon.

102kts in southeast quadrant. Could be the strongest quad due to motion but east to northeast quad could still be stronger.

Probably even higher winds in the NE quad.

Odd that the pressure has not fallen at all.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

Not surprising, easily a cat 2 now. Looks stronger than that but given its environment it'll lag behind its visual appearance a bit.

Colors of lost purpose on the canvas of irrelevance

Not a meteorologist, in fact more of an idiot than anything. You should probably check with the NHC or a local NWS office for official information.

Sally had those 110 kt FL winds an hour before it made landfall, which strongly suggests to me that a post-season upgrade is possible.

Very curious to see the NE quad now. Might find 90-95 knot SFMR winds there.

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.

The extrapolated to dropsonde pressure relationship varies from plane, and also depends on the exact altitude each plane is flying. So I would argue it's more meaningful to look at trends in extrapolated pressure throughout each given flight.

Throughout Zeta's gulf trip, the winds and pressure have sort of taken turns strengthening, so this isn't super surprising. It is 2mb lower than the NHC's 11am pressure, but let's wait for the dropsonde.

The visible satellite is absolutely fascinating right now; Zeta continuing to intensify looking like a classic hurricane, scampering NNE just ahead of that blanket of stratus denoting very cold air. It's going to be a tight race...

Eye dropsonde supports 974 mb, a 10 kt wind at the 971 mb pressure level, with a splash at 975 mb.

In what fashion? Satellite picture presentation or intensity/ damage potential or bit of both? Prayers for all!

For northern gulf coast, obviously both.

The 100 knot FL winds are in the SE eyewall, I'm very curious on the Northern Eyewall of Zeta.

Still nothing but sprinkles here and some light winds, but the clouds are darkening. That's a sign the rain isn't too far behind.

Zeta may already be a Major hurricane, 105 knots 500 meters above sea level at the SE eyewall

Recon reports that the eyewall is open to the NW, which probably explains why the winds in that quadrant are so light.
