I think it became a cat 1 many hours earlier.

I am only a tropical weather enthusiast. My predictions are not official and may or may not be backed by sound meteorological data. For official information, please refer to the NHC and NWS products.

wxman57 wrote:Core is gone, due to a combination of wind shear and dry air. I don't think it's coming back. It appears Stewart (NHC) used a FL to surface wind conversion that only applies to strong squalls in the eyewall of a hurricane (paper by James Franklin of the NHC). Recon data did not measure any surface wind much above 50 kts. There are two buoys that went through Eta's strongest squalls this morning. Neither reported above 35=40 kt winds. Could be a small pocket of 45-50 kt winds now, but that's questionable. Lacking strong convection near the core, strong FL winds aloft will not make it to the surface. Don't focus on the center in Florida. Worst conditions on the west coast will occur VERY shortly. Probably sustained wind 35-40 mph with higher gusts. By the time the center makes landfall (before sunrise tomorrow), all of Eta's squalls will likely be east of Florida. There won't be much associated with Eta's center, as there isn't now.

Is this the beginning of the end for storm ETA?....but for now, whether or not it looks impressive on satellite...it poses hazardous conditions for Florida nonetheless!...I tip my hat to you Wxman57... ETA has been a difficult storm to forecast, and I never second guess your forecasts, you are on a different level man.....

LLC trying to refire convection, 06z HWRF did show that it will refire convection during the day today but nothing like last night's deep convection.

This next long feeder band is getting ready to come in from down here up to Sarasota/Venice, looks pretty healthy. Can hear the thunder offshore.

Congrats Eta, you have surpassed Barry as the ugliest hurricane in existence.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

Quite ironic considering it was one of the best looking hurricanes before its first landfall.

In Englewood - On my pool patio office (screened in - roof overhead). Power still on. Reminds me of our famous "no name storm". Pretty wild here now

Just like Jon Snow..."I know nothing" except what I know, and most of what I know is gathered by the fine people of the NHC

I disagree. It wasn't at 4 AM. It was damn impressive! That was before it was even called a hurricane and before recon. Many storm in the past have met the dry air or sheer fate.

Compared to a week ago when it reached a RAW ADT score of 8.5.

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.

Once again, mods are having to clean up nonsense. This is not a place to go after other members unless you are looking for a quick suspension.

My phone is blowing up with up all sorts of alerts! Glad I signed up for those a long time ago just in case I wasn't safe at home watching S2K  Still quite windy and squalls coming in here. There's some 'very intelligent person' out there trying to windsurf on our basin  Surge is up almost to the top of our seawall but I'm not too worried, seen worse.

Just talked to a co-worker of mine in Sarasota, her kids' schools are not closing until tomorrow. I was like, the storm is going to to be long gone by tomorrow, lol.
Parents are going to be freaking out over the next few hours with the worst wx coming in.
46 mph wind gust in Sarasota Airport as I type this.
