No doubt. This is beyond rapid intensification. Looks like the winds have yet to catch up to the pressure.

Looking worse by each satellite image in terms of potential destruction.

Surface pressure close to 950 mb last pass with 95 knot winds and the Satellite presentation is horrific.
Wobble watching to see if this stays on track for the apocalyptic landfall starting to feel criminal.
Hope this doesn't surprise anyone without an evacuation plan.

The eye is clearing out and somewhat large so although the official forecast has this turning NNW by this afternoon the Northeast Texas coastline is in extreme danger.

Looks like we got one of those eye melds instead of an ERC. A new eyewall never truly formed and took over IMO

It looks like Laura was in a ERC and it has completed it. The AMSR2 pass was about 2-3 hours old.

The satellite imagery and the size of the storm is simply frightening. Feels like seeing Katrina return to the gulf again 15 years later, and ominously Katrina was starting to blow up at almost the exact same time of the year.

Holy ****, the pressure drop is insane. This rate over the next 12 hours will get Laura below 910 mbar :double:

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

Serious question, what's stopping it from bottoming out? There's some shear near the coast but that's about it

Doesn’t look annular at all. Would be an incredible and rare sight to see though, but regardless, we’re watching this thing explode. Hopefully folks in TX/LA have taken the necessary precautions because this is starting to look devastating. Sending good thoughts your way from NC.

It looks like not just the winds are lagging, but so is the central pressure. I'm expecting the pressure to continue tanking considerably.

The only thing that will stop it is land at this point.

Can't get MIMIC-TPW now but GFS shows Laura drinking the EPAC juice in about 4 hrs.
Major infeed then kicks in.

Eye sondes support a slightly higher pressure of 963mb, but that would still yield a 6mb drop in less than an hour. Can’t wait to see how NE quadrant has caught up.

Laura is going to explode into a category 5 today. That comparison between Laura and Irma shortly before recon found Irma to be a 150 knot storm are telling

There has been plenty of model support for this especially the hwrf for days now, nhc wasn't going to bite but since last Saturday this intensity seemed more than likely just based on the setup and with decent model support
