Tropicalatlantic's last update was 40 minutes ago, but don't be worried NHC and tropical tidbits still provide new incoming recon data so everything should be fine.

Fun fact! When Iota strengthened to over 100 mph winds, it put the 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season in 2nd place for most 100+ mph storms (CAT 2+) with 9 storms.

Currently 2020 ties the 2010, 1893, and 1886 seasons and is behind the 1950 season which featured 10 such storms. It's possible we could tie 1950 with Kappa if it attains CAT 2 intensity. And if Hanna had a bit more time and broke 100 mph, Kappa, if CAT 2, would break the record....unless December decides to give us its first 100 mph storm...

However 2020 by FAR had the latest first 100+ mph storm (Laura, August 26) for ANY season with more than FIVE CAT 2+ hurricanes. This show just how back-loaded 2020 has been.

Don't directly imbed images from weather sites with the IMG tag. Use URL, just paste the link, or copy the image to a image hosting site.

Apparently the radar on one of the two islands(Santa Catalina or San Andres) has been knocked out. It was functioning during Eta

Finally checking on Iota after 7 hours of sleep, and oh. My. God.

I can’t believe recon found a 945 mbar system in last nights first pass, and then a 10 mbar drop in ONE HOUR. This is absolutely on the cusp of Category 5 status by now. Holy jeez...

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

You're just in time for a potentially historic recon mission. If it finds a cat 5 it'll be the latest cat 5 in the season since the start of the measurements in 1851.

I just had to wake up early to see this pass. I bet it's stronger than Eta at this point.

“CAT5” or “stronger than Eta” are both understatements.

Using a very old quote from Megi in 2010:

CrazyC83 wrote:MEGI HAS INTENSIFIED TO
THE UPPER REACHES OF SUPER TYPHOON STRENGTH

What is above that? Ultra typhoon?

In other words, Iota is approaching ultra hurricane strength :cheesy:

Just looked back at the raw recon data from last flight. Iota bombed out from 943.9 mbar to 931.3 mbar extrapolated in just 70 minutes — a deepening rate of 10.8 mb/hr, twice as fast as the fastest Eta got. I’m at a loss for words. I think we might have a sub-910 mbar system on our hands by now...

155mph/925mb. Keep in mind that recon hasn't even reached Iota just yet.

The very small Isla de Providencia, with a population of around 5k people, looks to have gotten hammered by parts of the southern eye wall, but glad it was not a direct hit.

I can't remember the last time the NHC was that bullish on a storm's intensity before recon arrived. This is absurd.

Meet Iota, the STRONGEST storm of the 2020 Atlantic Hurricane Season in terms of wind speed....already.

Likely already the strongest in all categories.
