Re: ATL: SAM - Hurricane - Discussion
The hurricane hunter is now approaching the north west side which seems to be the strongest side of Sam.

152kt FL and 110kt SFMR (115 flagged). Subpar mixing right now but impressive winds aloft.

Really, really doubt that’s the case. Dropsonde in ne eyewall showed efficient mixing to the surface, and sfmr was lower in the NE than the SW. I have a hard time believing a 72% reduction when measurements in the SW quad and NE dropsonde suggest it’s above 90%

All this talk about pressure not being low enough. Confused because we have had higher pressure storms classified as category 5. Am I missing something? Honestly just curious.

IR has continued to improve after the 152 kt measurement. No doubt a Cat 5

No doubt in your opinion. There is plenty of real doubt as to Sam's strength and ability to mix flight level winds down to the surface. It's close IMO, very close.

I agree at this point. Be willing to bet money it isn't upgraded though after looking at weather twitter and what the pro mets are saying there. Their saying it is just below cat 5 intensity.

The NHC has shown in recent years to be more hesitant to upgrade to Cat 5, unless evidence is overwhelming. I'm going to guess 135kt for the intermediate.

I am in no way a professional. Take what I say with a grain of salt as I could be totally wrong. Please refer to the NHC, NWS, or SPC for official information.

It's is honestly a rare honor know only to a few that does need a mountain of evidence to support. Unfortunately that rare honor usually goes to storms that hit land, which is why Lorenzo was cool to see reach cat 5 and Sam would have been too.

Next pass should (hopefully) be another sample of the NE quad.
135 knots, MSLP 934mb is my current guess based on the data I'm seeing.

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.
Re: ATL: SAM - Hurricane - Discussion
Maybe their taking that route so they can go back into the storm from the NE? 140 kt flight level wind dang.
