True, even though I'm pretty sure post-season analysis will update the best track to be a cat 2 sooner. But at least for now this is definitely the best looking system officially categorized as a cat 1.

Hugo had that photogenic look too. As with here, ULL to the SW helps stretch out those spiral bands.

Unlikely but not impossible the intensity jumps from Cat 1 to Cat 4 between recons, since it's clearly intensifying rapidly and the planes won't be in it for hours yet. I'll be shocked if they don't find support for at least Cat 3.

The title of the topic mentions it's now a Cat 2. However, I don't see any new advisory yet from the NHC. What's the source? Twitter?

Oh looks like a Cat 2 upgrade has happened. So it’s definitely on schedule, at least so far. Who knows if it’ll jump ahead sooner rather than later?

Unless explicitly stated, all info in my posts is based on my own opinions and observations. Tropical storms and hurricanes can be extremely dangerous. Do not think you can beat Mother Nature. Refer to an accredited weather research agency or meteorologist if you need to make serious decisions regarding an approaching storm.

Hot tower on the northern eyewall popping right now. Could see rapid intensification for the next 24 to 36 hours.

Not surprising to see convective structure improve in general, with cooler cloud tops/generally deeper convection given the increasing OHC it is moving into. It was actually in a local instability minimum earlier this morning, which likely (along with some lingering effects of the Cuba interaction) resulted in the somewhat messy convective pattern.
