aspen wrote:The second dropsonde was actually a little NW of the firth, so either Henri is starting its turn way earlier than expected, or it’s just a wobble caused by the LLC and MLC being offset.
They also had 17kt winds at their center location so I think they were off a bit

Oh boy, the 5pm advisory has a Cat 1 hurricane going right into Cape Cod. You don’t see that every day.

I'd think a Hurricane Watch will be needed for the Cape and Islands, at least, by the 5 am advisory tomorrow. Probably a Tropical Storm Watch into Long Island (but not all the way to NYC) and farther north.

Tomorrow is going to be huge for the future of Henri. Shear is forecast to weaken and we will get to see how strong Henri can get. The stronger Henri gets the more likely there will be a landfall in New England.

3 out of 4 shot at ts winds for Nantucket
2 out of 5 for 50kt winds
18% hurricane force
wow
Nantucket grab the barf bucket. those are eyebrow raising odds for anyone.

Shear is letting up, its going to make it down to the 993 mb's that the models are calling for at 3 hours.
The ridge evolution depends on that upper level low to the west moving north around the building high.
And the ridge pumping effects the strength of the high.
Should have some good pro upper air layer analysis from Levi tonight.

Starting to get pretty concerned with this one. A lot of those areas haven't had a hurricane in quite some time and I feel like because of that, people in the area may not know exactly how bad it could be. Even a Cat 1 can be very damaging

This would be a nightmare if it goes in west of Narragansett Bay. That could drive a whole lot of water into Providence

Pancakey (a technical term)

A hot tower just went off over the center

The Fox Point Hurricane Barrier should prevent that

I guess they learned from the 1938 hurricane and Carol...lots of coastal cities will need something like that in the coming decades
When was the last time they had to close the gates?

Honestly it’s been 30 years since Bob hit so I’m not so sure it’s been tested with any storm system since then. I would hope it would work as designed but who knows until it’s actually tested in real time with a hurricane

I looked it up and I think they closed them for Irene in 2011

I wasn’t here for Irene but from what my sister said it was mostly a wind event and not much rain.
