There was def little to no cell service from New Orleans to Mobile after Katrina. I remember trying to get a call into my family all day after. Never got them…got home from working and they were in my driveway waiting. Guess cell infrastructure has come a long way in 15 years.

Ah, yes, the Twitter engineering experts.

I'm struck by this thought - we're seeing lots of social media posts requesting help/rescue. That wouldn't have been possible without the cellular network, which seems to be operating well above many folks' expectations. Yes, I understand that it's completely down in some areas due to failure of the supporting structures or inundation. But still. It wasn't all that many years ago when nobody would have any way to "call for help."

That network is fine until the sites or the fiber networks lose commercial and backup power.

Cell towers have standby generators now with enough propane to keep them running for a week now. Things have changed for sure.

Super impressive winds, but the mountains out west will give you a run for the record.

Also I believe the CONUS record is 234 mph (195 kts) on Mt Washington.

Well, if the transmission towers fell into the Mississippi River, it certainly won't be a quick repair. But I think two months is an exaggeration.

Some areas could take two months but the transmission lines will be several days possibly a couple of weeks. I would say at least 5 days until any real power is returned to the area. FEMA will bring in generators and fuel for critical infrastructure. Most hospitals only have 12-48 hours of fuel for power and will need supply or evacuations.

Once again…

**** do not post erroneous social media BS ****

Also do not post this person or that person needs rescuing, we had hundreds of false reports during Harvey and as we went to hundreds of addresses wasting valuable resources and fuel only to be led to another bogus call. The disinformation and false news is getting ridiculous on here today.

Agreed. There's been a trend today of posting unsourced tweets as evidence of xyz happening.

My posts are my own personal opinion, defer to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and other NOAA products for decision making during hurricane season.

Salute!

TNX, 3090, as LaPlace has had flood problems from many storms. Nothing new with the prolonged east wind bringing in Lake water, etc.
====
Big news is the loss of 8 or so major power lines crossing the river. So all of Orleans Parish and 95%+ of Jefferson Parish will be without electricity for weeks.

This will affect river traffic for a short time, but weeks for the folks on the east bank. It will be a dystopian novel scenario. So imagine no gas, no cell phone, no 'net unless you have a landline modem doofer and way to recharge your laptop/phone/pad. etc, etc...... Even water supply is now suspect with loss of power for pumps and your own "boil water" problem once you run outta emergency supply and have a way to boil it, and then... Oh! You do have a full tank of gas and don't drive a Tesla or Leaf or....?

Gums sends...

Some sites also have microwave links. So fiber is preferred, but not necessarily the only way to keep a site linked.

My point is there has been a lot of progress in the past few years, which can help save lives.

Sorry I should've specified the highest readings recorded in tropical cyclones. And by surface reading I mean close to sea level.

The highest ground level wind gust reported in Andrew was 177mph, but I can't think of a sustained wind report as high as this one

Until we get positive daylight confirmation of breeched levees we really don't know for sure. Even local authorities may miscommunicate. Overtopped vs. fail is easily miscommunicated.
