I’m in the Memorial area, it hasn’t rained really at all over here. Not sure if I expect much tonight

I'm in Houston northwest of the beltway near 249 other than the shower that came through earlier no rain to speak of

I'm not seeing anything yet that justifies hurricane intensity. There was a 63 kt SFMR reading (right on the edge) but SFMR readings at the coast are likely unreliable.

Texas City, Galveston County checking in. Steady light to moderate rain with occasional gusts. Hoping it will continue to be quite the non-event as it has been so far.

I think the 74 knot flight level winds might justify it.

FWIW, the 75 kt flight-level wind measured by recon was at 850 mb. The typical flight-to-surface ratio at 850 mb is around 80%, so that may not be enough for an upgrade to hurricane intensity.

Imagine if Nicholas makes landfall in SW Louisiana would be one of the biggest modeling busts I can remember in recent years.

At 850, we'd want to see flight level winds of at least 80 kt to justify hurricane intensity.

The ones I saw, if I’m not mistaken, were at 850 mb. It’s close but not quite there for the upgrade. Then again, it’s a subjective decision the NHC will make. Of course, if it continues to intensity, which I expect it will, it’ll be somewhat irrelevant.

Based on trends, baring any unexpected changes, I suspect the NHC will upgrade to H warnings at 10 pm CDT as well as upgrade Nicholas to hurricane intensity.

Does this mean its made landfall? I did see a dark dark spot pop on sandwich right at the coast.. but is that the center? Wait for recon i guess.
