Mind you, this was supposed to maintain or weaken upon landfall. That's sadly not the case. This feels like my own experience with Rai, with a storm surge to top it off. My thoughts are with Florida right now. This is probably historic.

I have in laws in Fort Lauderdale. I was going to send a text to check on them. StormingB is a friend to many of us here. I have checked in on him. He is good.

40-60 gusts in Fort Laud last night, power outage Lauderdale by the sea, very quiet now in the dry slot. IF we can get some sun later, might help to generate storms, wouldnt take much surface heating in the setup.

I texted them. We shall see. This storm. I am just an amateur, but boy the RI shocked me a bit. Goodness.

My apologies; I was referring to the peninsular part of the state, not the panhandle. Clearly something like this has not happened for a while.

The amount of risk these brave flight crews assume during these missions is enormous.

Ian looks to be slowing down with a slight west wobble the last hour or so. This will be catastrophic with the eyewall onshore for many hours battering the coast from Venice to Ft Myers. We could see tornado-like damage along a wide swath of this area in addition to high storm surge. I know its obvious at this point, but we haven't seen this over a highly populated area of the Florida west coast in modern history.

My parents rent a house every winter in the Bonita Springs area that is 2 miles from the water. Thank God they are not there, but I don't think the house will be there either in 2 weeks when they were supposed to go down.

I'm not seeing any Easterly component to the track. Captiva/Sanibel may stay *just* E of the eyewall at this rate, but bad news up towards Venice.

I mocked DeSantis yesterday for acting like a Venice landfall was a sure thing.

I *believe* this is the same flight that a local met from Houston, Chita Craft, is onboard along with her photojournalist. If so, she’s having a hell of a time I bet :double:

Once Ian moves north of Tampa's parallel, the water will come rushing back with force and will unfortunately likely be disastrous :(

Did I hear correctly that Ian nearly took out the recon plane?
