Storm Surge

I chased Hurricane Matthew from Cape Canaveral to Jacksonville on the A1 at about 10-15 mph.

By keeping Matthew on my direct right I kept the wind right on my nose at 120mph.

However it was the surge that was the most interesting. And what can easily kill you. It doesn’t necessarily come crashing in from the ocean. It upwells around you. And before you know it all escape paths are blocked.

The storm surge in Matthew wasn’t significant but it taught me more about always having an escape.

The folks at the TWC were in Daytona Beach as I tootled on by. It was hilarious as I was the only one out driving and I was doing about 10 mph. We waved at each other. The road collapsed behind me in several places some of you might remember the road being washed away. I was safe but right on that edge.

That was a fun chase.

Although I have been a hurricane forecaster since 1980 that only means I've been wrong lots of times.

Will there be any use of SFMR this close to land? Especially with the shallow sloping bathymetry (sp) of the gulf coast? Bet every high reading gets flagged.

You are correct I imagine. They may get some useful readings in the western eyewall, but that’s also not a guarantee. The flight-level winds and pressure readings are going to be more important. Dropsondes as well.

Are there any storm chasers doing a live feed at the moment?

Imagine yourself in the eyewall of a borderline Cat 5 and hearing the faint drone of a P3 flying overhead. That would be surreal.

I have been in a Cat 4 eyewall. You wouldn't hear the plane if it crashed into you.

I lost my home, everything in it, and all of my vehicles in Harvey. It was a nightmare, but my family survived. If he is safe, that's the most important thing.

I lived in Houston for Harvey.

Spent 3 days and nights in my 22’ aluminum boat rescuing folks in river conditions.

My hat is off to the Cajun Navy. Those guys are relentless.

Much appreciation to you and those like you. The Cajun Navy rescued us. I am known to be the "weather expert" among family and friends (which I'm not), but I do keep up. My house was built in 1960 and had never flooded, despite many houses in the neighborhood that had flooded numerous times. It was unprecedented. It was insane.

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone facing Hurricane Ian.

A poster said regarding this traffic camera “That site is 14 ft absl according to en-us.topographic.”

To expound on this, everyone is now in “Nowcasting” mode. Huge storms often wobble and interact with the environment differently than a smaller storm would. Pay attention to your local Mets so they can keep you updated with local expectations as things are changing.

Agreed - Captiva is the "lucky winner" - I hope and pray nobody is there.
