Re: MED: DANIEL - Post-Tropical/Aftermath
Right now, the death toll is at 7,000 with at least 10,000 more people missing. Daniel will be the deadliest cyclone since Nargis.

Very late follow-up, but for the sake of keeping information up to date, it turns out that Daniel was named by the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) located in Greece. Trying to find where and when they officially named it but having a hard time...
Storm Daniel developed in Greece and was named by the Hellenic National Meteorological Service.

Here is a link to some information I found about the Hellenic National Meteorological Service and their list of names for barometric systems. The name "Daniel" was submitted by Israel.

Not sure where they get 23, I count 25 storms with 10k fatalities since 1900.

Horrific disaster of major proportions. I translated to English.

The death toll caused by Storm Daniel in Libya is overwhelming, more than 11,000 people, and it is feared that it will increase much more.
This cyclone passed over Greece, intensified over the Mediterranean Sea and then hit Libya, where it caused three dams to collapse.
See the moment when a street became a mighty river, which destroyed almost everything in its path.

Some DPR images as a point of interest from the intense thunderstorms north and east of the center with precipitation rate above 100 mm/h in some places on 7 and 8 September and from the cyclone after the landfall on 10 Spetmber.

Re: MED: DANIEL - Post-Tropical/Aftermath
I have just noticed that CIMSS provided ATMS data of Daniel. http://tropic.ssec.wisc.edu/real-time/atms/archive/2023/202390M.html
A weak warm core was evident at least up to 200 hPa with temperature anomaly around 1-2 K (on the last frame at 0025 UTC 11 September they put the center's position near 21.5E 31.8N, but according to my estimation - based on satellite images - it was farther east and a bit more south, at 23.1E 31.4 N, much closer to the warm spot which visible in each images, so the temperature anomaly also could be higher on the cross section).

DanieleItalyRm wrote:I can't stand all the people calling Daniel a subtropical cyclone because on the phase diagrams it's a shallow warm core. Phase diagrams are not always consistent and Daniel's structure is that of a 50kt tropical storm, T3.5dvorak. No doubt.
Why metoffice not classified Daniel as 01M?
They update their tropical cyclone database at the beginning of each month retroactively, so the cyclones of September became available today. Here is the track of Daniel.
