Yeah, i'm getting pretty worried about that possibility. I have very close friends in Crawfordville and I suggested they bug-out out of caution. They have a solid home, generator, etc but... all those trees?! Plus even if unlikely for their location, storm surge could play into things as well.

Almost all of Wakulla County can go under water in surge. Not necessarily will in this one, but even a portion of Leon County is in a Zone E I believe.

The problem there is that a lot of the residential construction is single story ranch homes and there's just nowhere to go for higher elevation (well, other then north to Tally)

Dixie county could be in a lot more trouble if that overall motion continues. I seen comments from Andy Hazelton cautioning the same thing just an hour or so ago.

Intensity is probably at 95 kts. Probably reach Cat 3 in a couple hours.

Latest data supports 95 kt, although it may be even stronger.

Ok I finally have to ask. Multiple posters have expressed concerns about all the trees in Tallahassee. Do other parts of Florida not have trees? Are the trees in Tallahassee particularly vulnerable or something?

I heard that Jim Cantore and Charles Peek, as well as Reed Timmer, are leaving Cedar Key as it is too dangerous for them. That should be a signal for everyone to leave if they can.

Why would you evac in Tally? Usually you should evac if you face surge, you run from water and hide from the winds. People evacuating in places that arent going to surge hurts the people who really need to evac.

I evac for anything cat 3 or higher and I’m nowhere near surge. I like having electricity and not worrying about a tree coming through my roof or a tornado ripping it off with my family inside. Also If there’s an emergency you can’t get out if you stay, sometimes for days. I made that decision after staying through my first bad storm and being miserable and unable to get anywhere and even when I did all the stores were out of power too and nobody had fuel.

I am in Sopchoppy, we are prepped. I had major surgery 6 weeks ago and really can't travel right now. Just praying and hoping for the best.

aspen wrote:I know everyone’s pretty excited by the possible pinhole, but I think the eye is a little larger. I also think we’ll see the pressure level off in a bit as the winds try to catch up. Idalia will probably be in the upper 950s next pass, and recon is barely finding evidence of Cat 2 surface winds. There’ll likely be a pause in its rapid deepening as the eye clears some more and the winds work their way down to the surface.

I must respectfully disagree. The winds are already knocking on the door of cat 3, very well support an upper level category 2 and there's still a ton of time for her to continue the current trend.

There's just a lot of dense forest area in that area of Florida. Even in the city limits of Tallahassee, trees everywhere. It's what makes Tallahassee and many inland towns in Florida so beautiful.

Charles Peek was on TWC a short while ago and said he was leaving but Cantore was staying and had a safe, sturdy place above the predicted surge levels.

That's what they signed up for. Hey, a commercial jet has a 500 mph wind on their aircraft every day. Not that kind of turbulence though.

I hope no storm chaser is stupid enough to go to St. Marks. Hubris can kill ya.
