Re: ATL: BERYL - Tropical Storm - Discussion
I am in SE Tx. It is either someone hitting a power pole with their car, Sun it does not matter. Finally got a generator tired of all the outages. Plus we have big oak and pine trees around me. Stay safe everyone. Just this past June had my neighbors pine tree fall on my living room during a random rogue storm. Power out for three days. BTW I was in my living room on the computer watching tv and suddenly heard this big bang. Thought it was lighting really close. Nope that was not it. Seconds later I hear a sound like water I look up and water is just pouring in. I look in a different spot and a tree branch aimed at me on the couch probably 4 ft away. Scared the crap out of me. We actually made the news several days later. I can handle a TS, Cat 1 or even a 2 at this point. Been through Rita, Ike, Harvey and all the littles in between.

Hopefully Texans are like Floridians and have their preps in order.
Remember, if you have small generator, try to save the food in the refrigerator and run fans for the elderly especially. Never run your generator indoors and make sure you have enough water more than anything.
Irma - No power 10 days
Ian - No power 6 days
It ain't fun.

Rita 4 weeks without
Ike I was in Beaumont and can't remember going that long without.
Harvey, I was in Liberty and went at least 2 weeks cause Trinity river flooded the sub stations.
Had a generator for last one I rode out in Galveston but it was so minor for me I can't even remember which one it was.

With no significant recovery or changes in structure since that convective burst popped off this morning, I think we can exclude a major hurricane landfall now. Cat 2 is probably tough. The NHC is probably spot-on with their mid-range Cat 1 landfall forecast.

I am only a meteorology enthusiast who knows a decent amount about tropical cyclones. Look to the professional mets, the NHC, or your local weather office for the best information.

Very large area of 4500 CAPE air in the Mid GoM to Beryl's NE.
She should start ingesting this overnight.

Would you really lose power in a tropical storm or a category 1 hurricane?
I don't know where you live, but in Southeast Texas we lose power often during thunderstorms. When we have strong to severe thunderstorms, the outages can be massive. So yeah, power outages are very likely in a tropical storm or any category hurricane.

35-40 mph gusts is enough to cause power outages
Man, the power line system must be bad there. We get 35 to 40 mph gusts here all the time in Sacramento and never lose power. Usually when gusts hit around 55+ is when our power outages start.
The power lines are above ground here in the South, they aren't buried.
oh wow that explains it. I make a living as an options day-trader, so I could never afford to live in an area like that. Got to have my internet

Welcome newbies! Glad to have you here. When you get a chance, make sure to put your city in the profile. That can help the meteorologist on board give you better forecasts of upcoming weather events. Again, welcome!

Long time lurker here, Is it possible beryl still moves east up the coast at landfall or is that pretty much a done deal with Matagorda area? Would/could strength play a factor still on a landfall point? Is the weakness in place and ready? Just curious. TIA

We lost power for about six hours or so during TS Bill in NOLA in 2003. Also in the fringes of Andrew and Lili (where we got TS-force winds). However, I've also been through a fair amount of tropical storms without losing power. Hurricanes we typically do, even Cat 1s. I always expect to lose power until I don't.

Freeport/Surfside Beach area is as far east as I can see landfall happening. Factors that might lead to changes in Beryl's track include possible center reformations and how much Beryl intensifies tomorrow as Beryl could wobble to the north if she strengthens quicker than expected. Not a done deal yet for the Matagorda Bay area but it is the most likely landfall area at this point.
