Walked down as far as I could towards the intercoastal in Dunedin, ended up getting to alt-19 before storm surge was too high:

I looked at the survey data, the house in the far left of the image is at 6.40ft elevation. The house immediately behind me is at 10.70ft. Water had come across alt-19 but not up into the yard of the houses on its inland side, so I would estimate storm surge here at about 7-8 feet.

It looks like the NOAA recon circling in the eye for about half an hour earlier tonight was to release a UAV into Helene to take additional measurements as the storm was landfalling. If this is the flight and UAV I think it is I believe I have friends who are involved in its development.

Interesting that Tallahassee radar has stayed up but KVAX (Moody AFB, GA), where the eyewall is now, went down at 0212 UTC (9:12 PM CDT).

The eye looks to be in Georgia now. I'm guessing winds are down to about 95 kt now, and I think this will be a category 2-level impact for Georgia.

I'll be honest, I expected this to be much worse. Now of course I'm basing this on the live footage I've seen on the weather channel thus far. Perry took a decent hit, but where Cantore is in Tallahassee the trees aren't moving more than just a windy winter storm. Just a bit shocked considering this storm was 140 mph. And really haven't seen any footage that made me go "OMG" like I've seen in other storms. Perhaps it's a location thing? I don't know.

Just like Jon Snow..."I know nothing" except what I know, and most of what I know is gathered by the fine people of the NHC

It missed Tallahassee altogether. The surge has been the main story thus far, and to be honest the rain in North Carolina will probably be the other. I've been whelmed by the wind footage, although this is at night and storm came in at a very rural area so probably a lot wasn't seen. Reminds me of Irma's 2nd Florida landfall in 2017 where I was also whelmed by what I saw there.

Yea, I should have been more specific, I'm just speaking of the wind only. The surge seems to have lived up to the hype unfortunately. But I was expecting horrific wind damage based on the landfall intensity. Perhaps the forward speed make it less intense.

I can only speak for the part of Tally I'm in (near FSU campus) but we are super lucky to have dodged this one. Power is still on and damage is minimal. This was nothing like the tornado event in May. Points east were not so lucky.

hurricane is moving well east compared to what it was forecast to go. May miss ATL altogether if these trends continue.

This is looking very good for a storm so far inland.

Worst flooding in Tampa Bay Area in decades. Countless houses flooded that have never flooded before. Seems surge just peaked as it is slowly dropping at a buoy near me. Can’t help but think we dodged a bullet with the storm track, but this storm will be talked about for a long time for the likely unprecedented damage in modern era.

The unmanned drone released inside of Helene may have recorded 135mph and 946mb, was decreasing through landfall.
