I thought Winter 2003-04 was pronounced dead...yet again.
Per an earlier discussion on the topic, it seems that roughly 7-14 days after winter is declared dead, it roars back to life. Maybe, I'll have to start using this contrarian index in the December-March timeframe to help predict major winter weather events.
If you are a snow lover like me that lives in N VA only 5 miles west of the Potomac River in a LOWLAND region, it was easy to think we northern Virginians were out of luck after that Behemoth 2-inch PLUS rainmaker that we endured only a few days ago. It would be nice to see a nice snow here this winter. Remember the last snow we actually experienced here was only a weakening s/w which was weakening AND trying to move forward over a COLD/DRY arctic CAD dome of air which REALLY ate away at whatever snow we were able to eke out of that weak system..........
Yeah, it would be nice to see a decent 12 to 15 inch snow here in N VA, even if it must be followed by a rain w/50s and 60s only a few days later.........that would be bittersweet but tolerable.
That is why all thru Jan I agonized over getting a lot of snow then..........because I have been here in N VA all too long (30 years) and I know all too well that N VA does get fairly heavy snows in Feb/early March BUT the Caveat: Those snows are often followed by heavy rainstorms PLUS mild 50s and 60s only days later.
