Re: Texas Winter 2023-2024
Some cold risk showing back up in the ensembles as early as Feb 5-7. Then, the EPS and Weeklies look to support a -AO/NAO pattern through the remainder of the month. Also, the Southern Plains looks to be more active than in January, so there should be some better systems to try and take advantage of the cold air. As always, timing will be everything

I was always told that when I lived in DFW too and even my first winter here in Tulsa nothing major happened til February and then there was still the biggest snowstorm I've seen here as soon as the month started

My friend down there always said it was because January was usually a dry month with the flow or whatever
Which I think DFW measuring an inch or whatever last week was the biggest January storm since the 80s so maybe he had a point

Yeah, January has been a pretty boring month around here for as long as I can remember.

Prior to the 1990s January was often one of the best month for ice and snow. But after in the 2000s-on it's been February with the higher number of events.

It's like some kind of climate shift is happening. We didn't used to get such hot weather until October, either but here we are.

Another round of beautiful liquid gold this morning across much of south Texas! SA picked up another 1-2 inches, and we could have another round tonight! This slow-moving storm system has been just what the doctor ordered

Wonder if it has to do with the lack of Arctic sea Ice in Jan.

2.29" Monday, 3.68" yesterday, and 0.48" so far today. I've got a 6.45" total in a little over two days.

Re: Texas Winter 2023-2024
January is our driest month, climatologically for DFW. Extreme weather and snowfall has been more common in February historically, and I remember December was similar growing up.
Winter is getting shorter though. December looks and feels like November used to. Including the leaves changing and weather. This past December was +5* just a recent example and we’ve had some other record breakers in recent years.
I won’t bring up our recent summers lol.

Can someone explain the synoptic setup that is bringing the rain to central and SE Texas the last few days? Is it just the Pacific jet getting kicked up? How large of a role does Gulf moisture play in a setup like this?

A slow-moving trough of low pressure over Mexico and the SW US. It keeps kicking shortwaves out across TX which is producing several rounds of showers and thunderstorms. Plentiful Gulf and Pacific moisture combined with the slow movement of the storm system are leading to the heavy rainfall that we've been seeing.
