AFTER AN UNUSUAL START THIS MORNING WITH LAKE EFFECT BAND FROM LAKE MI MAKING IT WAY ALL THE WAY INTO THE FA WITH A VERY NARROW AXIS OF UP TO ONE INCH SNOWFALL AMOUNTS EXTENDING FROM WRN FRANKLIN/ERN LINCOLN COUNTIES DOWN INTO WRN JACKSON COUNTY THINGS ARE MUCH QUIETER NOW. MODIS IMAGERY FROM EARLIER TODAY SHOWED LAKE MI ORIGINATION VERY WELL WITH VERY NARROW CLOUD BAND EXTENDING FROM THE LAKE INTO NE AL. VIS IMAGERY ALSO VERY NEAT THIS AFTERNOON DEPICTING A VERY NARROW ENHANCED SNOWPACK BAND DOWN ACROSS IN AND INTO KY COINCIDENTAL WITH THE LES BAND. SNOWFALL AMOUNTS ACROSS TN/AL NOT QUITE ENOUGH TO GIVE GOOD REPRESENTATION ON SATELLITE ESPECIALLY GIVEN THE FLUFFY NATURE AND SIGNIFICANT SUBLIMATION THAT HAS GONE ON DURING THE DAY.
FLURRIES ARE NOW LONG GONE AND FCST FOR MUCH OF THE UPCOMING WEEK LOOKING PRETTY TRANQUIL.

It is pretty shocking that LES from Lake Michigan would ultimately reach NE Alabama and drop up to an inch of snow!! That snow traveled a really, really long way. I mean, really, one would not expect Alabama to be the lucky recipient, would they?
I watched the situation progress on the NWS satellite images (GOES) earlier today. Likely a once in a lifetime kind of thing.

In a sense, this occurence is even more amazing to me than the great big storm that just happened in New England, although that too was somewhat unusual since it made it into the top 5 snowstorms in the Boston area's recorded history. Still, something like this has got to be a very rare occurence as well. I wonder if anybody has any stats on just how often an anomaly like this occurs. I have heard of LES making it a very long way from the lake before, but then to go and drop 1 inch of snow in Alabama? That may not seem like much snow, but that actually seems pretty significant to me. I wouldn't have even expected a dusting really, let alone a whole inch, even if it was in a very isolated strip.

I don't know if this occurs often or not. However, I have lived in Atlanta since 1968. This is the first time that I can recall LES from the Great Lakes reaching this part of the US--in all the time I've lived here.
I'm rather surprised that others haven't read this thread and commented on the rarity and uniqueness of this event. I was absolutely gobsmacked by it myself this morning--and I'm not even in the Huntsville area. I suppose, though, most everyone's attention is on the Blizzard and so this event was easily overlooked.
I would be interested in any information others might have as to other previous occurences such as this.
