Severe Weather Outbreak Monday

#1 Postby conestogo_flood » Mon Mar 13, 2006 8:12 am

I have just been put under a Moderate Risk. This rarely happens. What is coming, is this a potential tornado event for southwestern Ontario? People here don't take tornadoes seriously, and I have never seen a hatched area for us. Should I prepare a few things and put them in the basement incase of a tornado?

Most importantly watch your weather all day long and be prepared to move to the basement.

This iw way early in the season for risks being posted for your area, but this has been a very potent system so far and continues to be. Be safe!

Don't we need sunshine here for storms? Will it be sunny in southwestern Ontario at all today?

No, but the sun is out farther south and east and the whole line will develop based on it. Plus the air mass is ripe for severe weather.

Slight risk all the way up here - I can't remember ever seeing that this early in the year.

The earliest I remember seeing it this far north is March 28, 1998.

Environment Canada definitely should upgrade the SW Ontairo watch to a Tornado Watch.

Environment Canada wouldn't issue a tornado watch if they had a gun to their head. 95% of the time, our tornado watches come after a tornado is reported.

I know - the Ontario region is especially bad with that (the Prairie region issues them much more often). It became worse after they moved all their operations for the province to one office in Toronto, where most people don't know anything outside the city limits. There should be at least five regional offices in Ontario (in London, Toronto, Ottawa, Sudbury and Thunder Bay).

Ok, what is going on. How come nothing is starting, and why is the new watch for the USA a large T-Storm watch? Is this a bust?

It's not even noon yet - it took a while for the activity to start yesterday.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
WATCHES/WARNINGS ENDED FOR SOUTHERN ONTARIO...

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH UPGRADED TO TORNADO WATCH FOR:
WINDSOR - ESSEX - CHATHAM-KENT
SARNIA - LAMBTON.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
==DISCUSSION==
A DEEPENING COLORADO LOW FORECAST TO TRACK THROUGH SAULT STE MARIE
WILL DRAG A SHARP COLD FRONT ACROSS SOUTHERN ONTARIO THIS AFTERNOON
AND EVENING. AS THIS COLD FRONT COLLIDES WITH A NARROW WEDGE OF
UNSEASONABLY WARM AND UNSTABLE TROPICAL AIR IT WILL IGNITE A LINE OF
POTENTIALLY SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS. THESE THUNDERSTORMS ARE FORECAST
TO DEVELOP IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN MICHIGAN DURING THE NEXT COUPLE OF
HOURS AND WILL LIKELY MOVE INTO EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN ONTARIO NEAR MID
AFTERNOON. ANY STORMS WHICH DEVELOP WILL BE CAPABLE OF PRODUCING
DAMAGING WINDS IN EXCESS OF 90 KM/H AND LARGE HAIL. AS WELL..GIVEN
THE STRENGTH OF THE VERTICAL WIND PROFILE AHEAD OF THIS FRONT..THERE
IS POTENTIAL FOR SOME OF THE STORMS TO PRODUCE ROTATION AND POSSIBLY
AN ISOLATED TORNADO. IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT THIS IS A TORNADO
WATCH..MEANING THERE IS POTENTIAL FOR A TORNADO ALONG THIS LINE IF IT
DEVELOPS THIS AFTERNOON..THERE IS NO IMMEDIATE THREAT AT THIS TIME.
ENVIRONMENT CANADA CONTINUES TO MONITOR THIS SITUATION AND IF THE
SEVERE WEATHER THREAT OR THREAT OF TORNADOES APPROACHES ONTARIO..
WARNINGS WILL BE ISSUED ACCORDINGLY.

PLEASE REFER TO THE LATEST PUBLIC FORECASTS FOR FURTHER DETAILS.

END/TUGWOOD

Wow, you know something is up if they upgraded it. IMO, the whole area should be under a tornado watch.

You know the situation may be bad when EC issues a tornado watch long before a storm, or tornado.

I don't know. Nothing for Waterloo Region yet.

I dont really expect a lot of tornaic activity this afternoon. I think most of the reports will be marginal wind damage over a fairly widespread region, though. I think maybe 10 tornado reports total if even that, with most short lived. Notice i say tornado REPORTS, not actual tornadoes.
