Could all the floating oil/gas/gasoline ignite?

This is the general tropical discussion area. Anyone can take their shot at predicting a storms path.

Could all the floating oil/gas/gasoline ignite?

#1 Postby GABE » Tue Aug 30, 2005 10:38 am

Not that we need anything more to worry about but what about all the oil down there together with gasoline and natural gas....if it floats to the top couldn't it cause a conflagration? Let us pray this does not happen.....

It has already - one house was shown this morning on fire and there is absolutely nothing they can do. They were worried about the fire spreading to nearby residences.

I've been really worrying about this as well, gasoline from cars as well as other flamables. If this were to happen fires would spread extremely quickly across the water.

Gasoline certainly could - and I've been concerned about what I've seen in some aerial shots that looked like leakage from underground tanks in gas stations.

Oil would probably be pretty difficult to ignite, but could possibly sustain flames if it really got going. There have been river fires in the past that were mostly oil.

as long as there are fumes and oxygen there can be a fire. It's the fumes that burn, not actually the liquid. If there is a spark near an oil slick it can burn.

They don't have underground gas tanks in New Orleans, but with catastrophic flooding the tanks can tear away from their anchorages and float away.

Someone said the other day that a significant number of them would likely leak contents into the floodwaters.

In large concentration, yes, they'll burn. What is more likely is that all of the fuels and chemicals are just adding to the nasty soup that the floodwater is fast-becoming. You've got bodies (human and animals), sewage, chemicals, fuel/gas, foodstuffs, vegetation and on and on. The sun isn't helping. Pretty soon, it will very dangerous to get this on you, much less be splashing around in it. :(

I have been noticing huge slicks all over the place as they do the aerial searches. It just seems to be getting worse and worse.
