Any word from Ocracoke??...

#1 Postby millibar » Sat Sep 20, 2003 9:12 pm

...have heard/read plenty on the unfortunate effects on Hatteras Island, but not of Ocracoke? Any words?

Thanks and regards,

I've been wondering about that, too. Hope they didn't lose too many ponies.

I have read that Ocracoke fared pretty well. They are more prepared for being cut off than Hatteras, I suppose, since they always depend on ferry service. Also, isn't the main village on Ocracoke more on the sound side than the oceanside?

Good News on Ocracoke Ponies

#4 Postby gabrielle01 » Sun Sep 21, 2003 6:55 am

Latest news on Ocracoke from Virginian Pilot online:

"All but one of the ponies on Ocracoke Island has been accounted for, officials said. They are ranging free, grazing where they want, their pens having been wrecked by Isabel.

- Lighthouses on North Carolina's northern Outer Banks withstood Hurricane Isabel. Ocracoke's 1823 lighthouse, one of the oldest on the East Coast, weathered Isabel well. The Cape Hatteras lighthouse, 25 miles north, which was moved inland to protect it from erosion, also is still standing."

I remember reading an atricle that mentioned 15 or 20 people rode out the storm in the local bar.

...is a well-known landmark, and is famous for not closing during storms. Great food, also; I highly recommend it if you ever visit thos beautiful island. Glad they fared okay (and the ponies also). Thanx all for the info.

SacrydDreamz Sometimes I catch a beer reference while reading. For some reason beer jumps right off the page for me.

If you ever do get into Howard's have an oatmeal stout for me.

I read that the the ferry docks on the Hatteras side are gone. Ferries were running today- just for supplies.
