Crash course in pressure ...

#1 Postby siobhan222 » Fri Sep 03, 2004 6:47 pm

Can anyone tell me in layman's terms what the pressure of the hurricane means? It sounds like the higher the pressure gets, the better. Is that right? Can anyone explain to this dumb blonde what this means?

The lower the pressure in the storm, the strong the storm will be. As you can see with today's advisories on Frances, the day started out around 940MBs (not sure exactly) and the winds were around 135 (again not exactly sure) and now at 8PM the pressure has risen to 960ish or so and the winds have decreased to 105 MPH. Hope this helps.

Yus, higher pressure means that the huricane is weakening. If you hear from an advisory that pressures have risen within a tropical system, its good news.

Thanks. I couldn't quite get that straight in my head. I'm having to learn too much too fast. Frightening!

Lower the pressure the faster the winds rush in rotating around the eye from the higher pressures around the storm.
