Confused

#1 Postby DoctorHurricane2003 » Sat Sep 18, 2004 6:23 pm

People puzzle me sometimes...they see the damage from Charley, Frances, and Ivan...yet they still want action from a hurricane.

I invite them to have a substitute:

Go out and rent a wrecking ball. In the process of getting your wrecking ball, buy some hammers and nails. Take the hammers and nails (which represent random outside objects) and throw them at your house from two opposing directions. Don't forget to aim for the windows sometimes. Then get the wrecking ball. Knock down some trees in the opposing directions. It is ok if one hits your house. Also knock some limbs into your pool if you have one. Then take at least four swings at your house with the wrecking ball...2 in each opposing direction. Don't forget to knock some power lines down! After that, get a large fire hose and hook it up to your nearest fire hydrant. Spray your house with the water for at least an hour in each direction. It is recommended that you do this on a cloudy and slightly breezy day.

You are now done. You have created an imaginary hurricane on your house. Now it's time to clean up...hope you had fun!

People don't puzzle me--they think this whole thing is a game. Obviously, the ones who are in it for the 'action," or the "thrill" have never experienced a hurricane. I may be a newbie here, but I find some of the joking about these disasters insensitive, and mean-spirited.

Those of us who've lived through hurricanes in Florida, and elsewhere, or who have loved ones in the path of one of these monsters may have a bit more empathy for those who have and will continue to suffer.

I shall pray for those folks.

I was one of those people who wanted a hurricane and I got it in the form of Frances. Here in Palm Beach Gardens, Fl, we were in the southern eye wall (without the benefit of the eye itself) for a very long time. The sound of the wind was so scary and I was very afraid of tornados. Then after, the next few days are so scattered it's surreal. Then the exaustion lays in and you just want to have your comfort food, in your comfortable house, and sleep! But none of that is there and then comes your breakdown day....you wish everything would all just go away...but it can't. So you deal with it best you can (staying close to God helped me) Then one day there's milk in the store, a couple restaraunts are open, you can get gas without waiting 4 hours in line and best of all your power comes on YES!! I realized that this hurricane affected me in ways I never knew. Mentally, physically and emotionally.

And that was only a Cat 2. But guess what? You can never convince the person who has not been in a hurricane that they don't want to be in one! That's how it was for me. Well, now I know, now I have experienced it and I am done. I don't care if I'm never in one again. It was that trying.

I have never seen anyone joking inappropriately on this board--maybe I missed the post. There are many people here who are skilled at forcasting weather and hurricanes - so they enjoy their jobs or hobbies. Some of us who have been through extreme hurricanes have become what I assume is "addicted". That in no way means we want a hurricane to hit our city. It is hard to explain the compulsion, but when a hurricane developes it is very hard not to watch its progress. Maybe we were more devastated than others and can't forget it - Who knows maybe we are actually more sensitive to the horror of disaster than others. My question to you is --- how on earth did you find this board. It took me a long time of searching. You must have more interest in hurricane than you may want to admit.

I have interest in them insofar as I want as much information so as to protect life, limb, and property. Having been through two of them, my intention is to get my butt outta here when told to evacuate, and not play games with nature.

I've ben through 3, now. 2 in the last month!
but, I come hear, because I'm even more aware that, each one is different. Each one can be "unpredictable"
Not like watching a horror story, but an attempt to understand and be more prepred.
I do things a lot differently than I used to.
I was blissfully ignorant, even after my first "little" hurricane (Erin 1995).
I have a combination of academic curiousity, and a need to understand what the experience is about.
Storm2K is educational and comforting.

What I think about this could get me in trouble!!!

What I don't understand is how you can blame some one on this board for what god doe's? Tropical cyclones are apart of makes are planet the life giver of are solar system. Snowstorms-Blizzards kill cause damage. Rainstorms do the same. Our Atmosphere can be deadly but is also for the good of the Planet. Now into more serious business. You build where hurricanes hit then your just asking for trouble. You rebuild then a hurricane comes maybe a year later in distroys it. Just like you waking up in the morning in finding a mean tiger in your room. The end story of that you get ate. It is not like I wise death or your house to be damaged. But there is a risk in anything. It is not like we have any say in it. So the best thing to do is to watch them in be wowed by the power of god that keeps us alive. I hope everything is great in you get your lives back together...

Dr Hurricane
I'm sorry for my post. It sounded kind of harsh. I didn't realize that you were from GulfBreeze. I thought you were just being mean, but I'm sure you are just in shock and very hurt. I was on the West so my damage is much less severe. I have done nothing all day --- the yard if full of tree limbs and leaves, the pool is green and there are these large insects flying over it, there is a tree leaning against the window awning and my house is totally dark because the man hasn't come to take down the wood yet. We suffered so much less damage than you, but still feel overwhelmed. I am so sorry for you. What damage did you experience?

We were talking about the storms today ( and who isn't :-) and the point was brought up that no matter where you live, mother nature has some surprizes in store for you... earthquakes, blizzards, tornadoes, fire storms, floods, volcanoes, hurricanes, noreasters, heat waves, locusts, drought, blights, hails, lightning, ...you name it. At least, with hurricanes you have a bit of warning. Build well, plan ahead, watch the reports, hang around Storm2k for more detail and get out of the way when you can.
