A question about flight delays-Tampa->>

#1 Postby FireForEffect » Fri Sep 24, 2004 5:15 pm

I have relatives flying back to NC from Tampa on Sunday around 4pm. Do you think this storm is going to cause flight delays? I know its probably too early to know for sure but I would like to get a heads up.

Basically, no one knows, hence, no response. My advice is just call the airline tomorrow.

If they can, I'd recommend that they try to fly on Saturday. Most airlines are very accomodating during bad weather and will not charge a flight change fee to change flights (provided they have room).

really think it is too early for Sunday....suspect should know more by Sat afternoon. Rule of thumb would be steady winds 35 or greater would normally keep sked carriers out....

That is what I was figuring, around 40knots would keep them grounded. The latest prediction track looks like it would be around 80mph winds on the east coast, not sure how that would affect Tampa. I do know at a minimum the flights will have to be re-routed as they fly out over the water right were the storm is expected to go.

uhhhhh, more like over 100 mph on East coast and wherever it exit West Florida deduct 40 mph.

Speaking of flights in and out of FL...my brother-in-law is scheduled to fly to Orlando on a business trip Sunday. I'm thinking that his plans may change somewhat because of Jeanne, though.

From the NOAA 3 day forecast it looks to be right at the Orlando area on Sunday afternoon/early evening.

I checked the SW site and it looks like West Palm flights are cancelled as of 9am Sat, and MCO flights cancelled as of 3pm. Tampa is still waiting to see what the storm does. Anyone care to venture a guess? I think an early Sunday flight may be in order.

I think Saturday night would be better.

Yeah it looks like the latest flight available is around 4pm and that is very iffy at best. They may close at 3 like MCO is doing. That could mean being stuck in Tampa for days.

Stuck in Tampa...

#14 Postby TreasureIslandFLGal » Sat Sep 25, 2004 2:53 am

Seeing as how I used to live in Raleigh, I would say that being stuck in Tampa in even the worst of conditions is better than being there on the best of days!

With that said... if you really want them home so badly, tell them to get on that plane one way or another on Saturday, anytime. Tampa will probably not close the airport as early as 3pm Saturday. It would be more like 9pm-12am before they would close (unless the storm speeds up more than the 14 mph its going now). :P
