There's a part of me that strongly agrees with you. On the other hand you've people who (for whatever reason) are completely at sea when it comes to tropical storms and hurricanes...those people have little choice but to rely on official directions as the sole arbiter of their actions during a storm event. This is a mistake, in my opinion. As in so many other cases, knowledge is power. In the main I think people who live in the coastal areas really should be aware of the hazards. Like, for example, every few years the Gulf decides to forcibly foreclose on your mortgage.
I just got an email from WWL that St. Bernard is calling for voluntary evacuations for those outside the levees. Saying tides 4-6' above normal. I'm gettin antsy about my family down in Lafitte/Barataria. What about the MS coast?
Edit: 4-6' is on top of 2' tidal activity.
With Hurricane Ike bringing some tropical effects to coastal Louisiana,
St. Bernard Parish officials have called for a voluntary evacuation of
part of the parish.
Parish authorities are asking residents who live outside the flood
protection system on the eastern end of St. Bernard Parish to consider
evacuating because of an anticipated storm surge of 4 to 6 feet, on top of
2 feet of tidal activity.
