Its cloud base definately looks to be increasing in size. On visible, I think it's quite impressive for what it is.

It has definately flared up this afternoon. Looks like yet another Gulf system. Some of the models indicate it will stay pretty far to the south. Lets see if that changes if the system develops further.

Remember the models are almost useless until a firm defined center is fixed.

Definitely looks like a healthy LLC has developed - centered somewhere around 16 to 16. N and 81 to 81.5W, moving WNW.

Right now the shallow steering is a little more northerly up ahead, but even if that lasts it looks unlikely that this can avoid landfall in the Yucatan.

Upper and lower level circulations are best seen on the rgb image: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/PS/TROP/DATA/RT/rgb-loop.html
(Yellow low and white/blue high). Obvious LL cyclonic and UL anticyclonic circulation roughly centered on the sharp burst of convection. Looks about 17N to me.

Dr. Neil Frank said last night he expected this system to develop.

He said it was a real possibility a Tropical Cyclone could move into the GOM this weekend and we would have to watch it very carefully.

What would you expect him to say: "Nothing to worry about here...please don't tune back in at 10 pm."?

What other hurricanes have formed in this relative location, then hit the USA Gulf Coast?

Yeah but did you notice all the dry air in the GOM. There wont be anything being formed till the dry air is gone from the Gulf. We all know this can change but it does not appear to be moving out real quick and if it goes over the Yucatan it will be shredded apart. We will have to sit tight and wait and see.

Have you guys ever seen a more impressive satellite picture for something that's not even classified as a Tropical Depression yet?!
