FL hurricane strikes by region

#1 Postby docjoe » Tue Aug 16, 2005 10:35 pm

I found this graph on the NHC website and thought it was interesting. I had no idea that since 1851 more hurricanes in total have hit northwest florida than southeast florida. There have been more major canes in SE FL though. Strike numbers are listed by category, by total, and by major storms. Very suprising to me.
C1 C2 C3 C4 C5 total major
Florida 43 32 27 6 2 110 35
(Northwest) 27 16 12 0 0 55 12
(Northeast) 13 8 1 0 0 22 1
(Southwest) 16 8 7 4 1 36 12
(Southeast) 13 13 11 3 1 41 15

docjoe (sprry the graph isnt easier to read but i cant make it line up right. here is the link http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/paststate.shtml

Well that's easy to explain.

SE FL - CV storms which only occur from Aug-Sep. Examples: Andrew and Cleo.

NW FL - CV, GOM, and Carib. storms all have the ability to impact. Examples: CV - Ivan, GOM - Opal, Carib. - Dennis.
