Is 882mb in the Atlantic equivalent to 850mb in the Pacific

#1 Postby JohnTK5 » Wed Oct 19, 2005 9:51 am

I was talking to someone in another message board, who claimed that since there is a large pressure difference in the atlantic and pacific basin, that 882mb storm in the Atlantic would be equivalent to a 850mb storm in the Pacific in terms of intensity. Is this really true?

No. 882 mb is 882 mb in the Atlantic or the Pacific. That's the pressure measured inside the typoon, cyclone or hurricane and it doesn't matter what basin your in.

Actually, there is a difference. Here is what I have on my chart comparison:

Dvork 8.0 = 170knots = 196 mph = 890mb Atlantic MSLP = 858mb Pacific MSLP = Cat 5 SS

Take 8mb of the Atlantic and take off 8mb off the Pacific= 882 and 850mb? No question this is the new pressure leader on this side of the Earth.

Since the mean pressure in the Pacific basin (West Pac mostly) is on average lower than the Atlantic basin, it would in theory be "easier" to get to 882mb in the Pacific than the Atlantic... which I believe is where this comparisson comes from.
