I guess I'm going to need to check out the magazine so I can know what exactly we're talking about. I thought it was just models in swimsuits. Heck, I remember when I was in 7th grade and everyone was talking about a book that was in our library called "Wifey" by Judy Blume. But the only ones talking were the kids. If you've read it, you know that it's NOT one of her children's books.

6th grader suspended
Hardcore stuff should be cause for suspension and then some. That rrash is harmful in so many ways and has no place in school.

I saw this issue. I didn't notice any sports articles in it. (But then again, maybe I wasn't looking for them - if you know what I mean). There's pictures in there that you would NOT see at a beach. 6 pages of "painted-on" suits. These were not suits at all, just paint on the body to look like a suit, but if you really "studied" it (like I did) you can see that it's bare skin. And no strategically placed arms or accessories either! This one does not belong in school!

Okay, wait -- are we really talking about hardcore stuff? Surely, the SI issue is not pornographic, even in a softcore sense, is it? Are there men or women "partnered" with the models? If not, then it's not pornographic. Inappropriate for kids, maybe. Indecent, maybe. Obscene, maybe.
I still have to see it to give an honest opinion.
Ed -- you should see the Galveston beaches during Beach Party Weekend in April. :o
I don't get why they call them swimsuit models. When I was on the swim team, our suits were one piece, racing back lycra Speedos. You can't really "swim" in a bikini. Wade in the water, maybe, or sunbathe (thus, bathing suit). But I guess "Sports Illustrated Bathing Suit Issue" just doesn't have the same ring, does it?

OK, some of you have said that SI Swimsuit issue is not a learning tool or educational.
Now, answer this question. How much learning is going on while that student is suspended from school????
I'll tell ya! Absolutely NONE. So, if you want to talk about the importance of learning. All the student is learning is hypocrisy. I would imaging that Hot Rod magazine is allowed, the only difference is the number of pics in the magazine.

Good point...it really needs to be all or nothing. You can't expect kids, especially at that age, to use any descretion. Again..not sure what the school's policy was, but if magazines are permitted, and the content is judged "innapropriate, then the whole argument about "what" is appropriate becomes the centerpiece.
The only safe way is to ban magazines all together unless like you said, it is approved for a class project.

By 6th grade, I'm willing to bet that the kid knew better than to bring that particular magazine to class. I'm sure he knew that there was no educational value in it (other than sex ed, maybe lol). I'd be surprised if this was the kid's first offense!
Although I don't think a 6th grader has any business looking at half naked women, (nor does an adult male, unless he's looking at his wife) as I mentioned before, if this had happened in my classroom, I'd have taken the magazine and destroyed it, explained to the child why it was inappropriate and dropped the issue. If the kid had been in trouble before, I may have called his parent(s). Sometimes making a big deal over something as trivial as that causes more trouble than it does good. On the other hand, if the magazine had been a weapon, or drugs, I can understand sending the kid home. I had a 3rd grader bring a hunting knife to school once. He knew exactly what it was for and had it hidden in his jacket sleeve in a position that he could readily have used it on someone. Needless to say, he was sent home for the remainder of the school year. And no, he wasn't learning, but he wasn't keeping others from learning!

Although I agree that suspending the kid was a bit overboard, if this kid was a "troublemaker" and a constant classroom disruption, I bet there was a lot more learning going on in the classroom AFTER he was gone.
I am a firm believer in giving each child an equal opportunity to learn. However, if a kid is keeping others from learning, he/she needs to go! When 90% of the teacher's time is spent trying to keep one child out of trouble, the other kids are suffering.

6th grader
You can be sure that a 6th grader has discretion and knows that a magazine with scantily clad women has no place in a classroom. That being said, boys of that age are beginning to have sexual urges that make them interested in such things. IMHO, it is up to his mom and dad to guide him towards more appropriate reading material!
