Actually, it played pretty well in Texas too, at least if my experience was representative at all of what happened. I saw Fahrenheit 911 last night in a sold-out theater in Southeast Houston, and it got a lot of applause and even a standing ovation....in TEXAS of all places!
And it didn't focus much on the connection between 9/11 and Iraq. It covered every complaint that has been made against the Bush administration, from their relationship with the Saudi royals to the cuts in veteran benefits to the "excessive" vacation time.
It was one-sided, no doubt about that ....then again, the right has plenty of one-sided media of their own (think Rush Limbaugh etc). As long as politics are going to be excessively combative, it makes sense that both sides should try to get their digs in ~ otherwise we all end up with a lopsided perception of things.
I wouldn't swallow the message of this movie (or any movie or media) whole without researching it, but it does bring up some viable points. It will be interesting to see how it plays nationwide, and if it opens up any new points of debate.
