I Miss the Star Spangled Banner

#1 Postby southerngale » Mon Feb 06, 2006 12:16 am

Can anyone just SING the song without chopping it up and trying to create a new version? Geez! I love the original...very emotional, yet makes me feel good, proud. I wonder if anyone will ever sing it that way again on TV.

Doubt that you ever hear it sung properly at any popular event.

It wasn't great by any means....too R&B-ish, which the National Anthem was not meant to be. However, it sure beat the dickens out of a handful of the renditions during the last World Series. Man, those were A-W-F-U-L!

I doubt that it'll be sung properly at "American Idol" auditions.

Unfortunately I also have to press the "ignore button" whenever it is sung on nationally televised sporting events!

My 11 1/2 yr-old niece sang it beautifully at a school basketball game recently...maybe these other guys/gals should take some tips from her!

I have no problem with "some stylizing" of the Star Spangled Banner, and I do mean a little, but what I heard last night was MANGLED!!!! Once I realized what was going on(I was at hospital and didn't have full attention to TV)I just turned away because I didn't even wnat to hear anymore. I have TOTAL RESPECT for the song, but I really have no use for many of the versions of it I hear nowdays. JMHO

Anyone remember what Roseanne Barr did after singing the National Anthem many years ago? Since that day I refuse to watch her.

Last summer at our local speedway, the owner hired a group to sing it. They changed the words and Ida threw a fit. She let them know about it too. They received lots of boo's.

Aaron Neville and Aretha. It was horrible. Like said before, why can't a singer sing it like it was meant to be sang?

One problem is that the melody of the Anthem requires someone with a wide register (and fairly decent voice quality) to do it justice. Most popular artists have neither so they fell that they have to embellish to make up for their shortcomings.

That's right, Steve. It does take someone with a wide vocal range to sing that
song - you think you've got it whipped until you hit..."and the rockets red glare..."
people are comfortable with a bass range, a tenor range, an alto range, and, a
soprano range, but, when you toss the whole mix in one song, it's a nightmare
vocal range for most singers, unless you're a 12-yr.old choirboy before the
voice change happens. And, george made me remember how it could've been
worse!

Could be why my niece didn't have any trouble at a school basketball game recently singing it.

I thought what they tried to do at the Super Bowl was cool (although I would have preferred Dr. John to sing instead of Aaron Neville). The sound mixing was terrible though.

Great idea, really really bad execution.
