I was just totally stunned....

Have you ever been shocked and stunned out of the blue? Well I was within the past 45 minutes...total shock, disbelief, and sadness :(

I was employed with EDS (Provider/ Customer Relations) in Jackson, Mississippi in 1995-96. I made quite a few friends there, but after moving back to Atlanta....and many of them accepting transfers and moving elsewhere across America, I'd lost track of most (I didn't have WebTV or email until June 2000).

This evening I was web surfing through some old Mississippi newspapers looking at past tornado articles, when I stumbled onto the obituary of a little girl named Charlotte I knew in Mississippi. Her mom and I were friends and co-workers, and Becky and her mom were best friends. The biggest shock: Charlotte died over five years ago :o

In November 1997, Charlotte and her mother (Johnnie) were involved in a terrible auto accident...Johnnie was seriously injured and Charlotte killed...she died the day before Thanksgiving

I just called Becky long distance, and she didn't know either...and is also stunned and saddened. Shortly after I moved back to Georgia in January 96', Johnnie also left EDS...Becky and Dave moved to Oregon late in 96', and they lost track of each other. I've sat here on many occasions since moving back from Mississippi wondering how my friends and co-workers were now, where they were living; and how big their kids were. I'd figured Charlotte had graduated from high school by now...and found out tonight this precious girl didn't even finish middle school (was 13 at the time of her passing

Why am I posting this? To tell others...if you have friends you haven't heard from in several years that you still care about....try to check on them if there's any way possible. Don't get slammed with shock between the eyes like I was tonight ...with the brutal force of a sledgehammer.

Perry, I'm sorry to hear that news. That is a shock. About 5 years after I graduated high schol, I found out that someone I knew there had passed on. This kind of stuff is never easy.

Perry - feel for you. That is a shock. Growing up there was a boy, my age/grade, who lived behind me. In between was his family's dairy farm (CSun - the Summe's). Anyway, John would come over to my street and hang out with all us kids. Pick up baseball games, kick the can, etc. My friends at one time said he had a crush on me. I was too shy to do anything about it! So he'd tag along with a bunch of girls and me, my dad driving, going off the HS dances. Later in HS I drifted away from him, began going to a different all-boy's school games/dances. Graduated, married (first time around, bad idea!), and moved away. Came back to my old suburb, visited a family I used to babysit for. The mom said - oh how sad it is about Johnny. I said - what? Turns out he was shot and killed by a racing buddy for winning a car race. The other guy was mad he didn't win. John died in his girlfriend's arms. He was only 21. I had missed his funeral! Didn't even know about it, since I had moved to the other side of town. In Mt. Healthy, where I grew up in the Cincy area, everyone knew eachother. From then on, I read the obit's. At such a young age too!

I've thought about John on a regular basis. How fun he was growing up, his young life just snatched away like that. So sad.

So that's my shock Perry - no one told me and so, I of course didn't attend his funeral. I would have, had I known. I still cried though - boy did I cry. For his family too.

I am so sorry to hear about your friends Perry... losing someone you know is never easy.. no matter how long ago we last saw them, it does not soften the blow, so to speak...

Being away from my home country, I am always the last one to catch up on the news from home. I learned many months later after I had moved here to the USA that one of my very best friends was killed in an Auto accident (no one had the heart to tell me, untill I started asking why I had not heard from her) It really tore me up.... What makes it so hard is she was killed by a taxi that ran a red light (this is a huge problem in South Africa, and the drivers or owners of the taxis are never prosecuted) and NO one was held accountable for what happened. I do miss her very much.

What a sad story Perry!! Bronnie, I can relate to your story. Nothing could hurt worse than that!! I was in a car accident that killed my best friend and hurt my sister very bad. I was devastated and the pain never goes away. Time never heals those type wounds.

I stay in touch with all my friends and was just reunited with two of them after a big feud in 1990. My life is much better for making things right with those two!!

I'm sorry to hear what happened to your friend. It is very easy to take things for granted. :(

Thanks everyone for the kind words of support. :)

I learned today this tragedy was even more senseless than I'd believed -- according to a former co-worker of mine the accident was caused by a drunk driver

Very sad!!! Perry..I am sorry for your loss. Something needs to be done about people who drink and drive...it's hard enough to navigate the roads as it is..without those irresponsible people added to the mix.. :x

Sorry to hear about the loss...although removed from your day to day activities, Perry, there is still an emptiness that can overwhelm you. Most of that comes from your compassion for the family and those who remain.

As you pass through the years, these things happen. Sometimes they seem to come in clusters. Othertimes, they are just discovered as yours was...while looking or talking or asking about something else.

That doesn't make them less painful. But it does serve to remind you the importance of appreciating the days you have.
