What about Mitch in 1998? I thought it was a major underhype, nobody would've thought it would've become a 905 mb 5th most intense major destructive Cat 5 killing 13,000 people in Central America type of hurricane. You must realize that it weakening right before landfall means nothing, it was the deadliest hurricane since 1780.

I'm not sure what everyone is talking about. Underhype? Is that even a word? How can something be Underhyped?
I agree wholeheartedly that the media overhypes a lot of storms (the media overhypes EVERYTHING in general). Gloria? Yes. Probably the first overhyped storm, but this was probably due to the fact that it was the first major hurricane to threaten the US in the "age of cable". And that is very significant. For example, I was in Miami when Hurricane David threatened in 1979. I can fairly say that David was pretty much over- hyped BUT ONLY in Florida. I'm quite sure it wasn't hyped on a national level. Hurricane David heading towards Miami today in 2005? Forget about it!
Allen? Allen followed a year after two very significant storms (David & Frederic) so you can understand the focus. Oh yes, and Allen WAS a category 5 hurricane at 899 mb. But I was around then and the level of media hype for Allen was MUCH less than any storm today.
In fact, I think the hype is going up exponentially. It doesn't even matter how strong the cane is. If a category 1 hurricane TODAY was headed directly toward the NE corridor, the media hype would DWARF the coverage that Andrew got.

I'm not sure gk. America sure loves their 'cane coverage! We've gone to a place that we can never return from.
With wall-to-wall cable news, Internet, Message Boards.....forget it. Our innocence is gone
The funny thing is I still have a feeling that someday if the U.S. ever gets popped by another Camille or Andrew it will come as an unexpected surprise. Some poorly sheared pathetic system exploding over the Gulf Stream overnight, picks up speed and slams the coast. Who knows? It might even make landfall before Anderson Cooper gets there.

100% agreed. Hey TWC even goes round the clock coverage even with a tropical storm making landfall. (Remember Arlene?????)

Well..we'll see what pathetic sheared ex TD10 does...should make its way to that area NE of the Bahamas over the next 5 days. After that I'm clueless.
BTW, the 00z models were run on it...they just came out very late. So they still have interest in it, obviously. SHIPs makes it a hurricane in 4 days.
