Who likes/dislikes or fears severe thunder storms?

#1 Postby 2 Seam Fastball » Tue May 13, 2003 7:57 am

I love the severe t storms with the loud thunder boomers that come through my area. Even driving in them is so cool. Its apart of me being a weather fanatic.

Hate to be a *smart @$$* about this BUT....with the likelyhood of us ever seeing a tornado almost ZIP here in the White Mountains, I LOVE the t boomers, the more severe, the better  NOW....if I lived in the Plains, Tornado Alley area, I don't think I'd like 'em so much :o

I like them. I go out on my screen porch and watch the lightning and thunder happen. One of the reason's I bought the house - so I could do this.

I like thunderstorms and severe ones, but tornadoes really bother me. Otherwise, they are fine! :)

I LIVE in the heart of Tornado Alley, and have all my life. My first memory of a tornado hitting our house was when I was five years old. It only took off the roof, but my own memory was of the THOUSANDS of frogs it had picked up from the creek nearby (called by the map makers for years Oak Creek, while the residents always called it Lightning Creek, because lightning ALWAYS struck at least one tree near the creek during any storm).

When I was a kid, if a big storm was hitting the other side of town, we would climb up on the roof of our house and watch it. I can remember trying to figure out what each piece of debri was from the distance as it flew up high enough to see it from our distance.

I LOVE thunderstorms, and am more afraid of Lightning than tornadoes. I love to watch lightning, but I hate electricity of any kind. I dont even like to change light bulbs.

People frequently ask me how I live in Oklahoma with all those tornadoes, and generally I tell them I live in Oklahoma BECAUSE of all those tornadoes. I know it sounds sick, but there is something about Spring in Oklahoma that not only gets your blood going with excitement, but humbles you at the same time.

I agree about the excitement/humbleness.

I LOVE thunderstorms. I wish I still had a porch to sit on to watch them come through!

I am more of a winter weather junkee. Thunderstorms are cool, but when my area is under a severe thunderstorm warning or a tornado watch/warning - panic mode usually sets in for my wife and I. We will usually head to the basement and nervously wait out the storm.

I forgot about dust devils! I saw one last summer in New Mexico! Pretty cool looking!

It's probably the closest I'll come to a "tornado" and that's fine by me! :o

I love a good T-storm. Prefer not to drive in them. But during the summer when it gets hot and sticky, air isn't so good to breath, a good T-storm clears it all out. My daughter loves to be home when a storm is coming. She really gets into it......our dog on the other hand hates them. She's always camped out in the bathroom.....

I like thunderstorms, that is why I am looking forward to the chances that exist this week across central Florida.

Over the years I wasn't fond of lightning at night, especially overnight... but at the same time enjoyed them moving toward and/or overhead. [May sound a little confusing.]

As for tornadoes, I wouldn't mind seeing one several miles away in an empty field not causing damage to property.

I love thunderstorms...to be honest tornadoes are too unpredictable for me..I would never live in tornado alley. Lightning is awesome to watch but I hate when it is so close and repetitive it hurts my head!!! Tropics is my favorite in case you haven't heard LOL

I've been too close for comfort to 2 tornados and do not want to go through that again! So in that aspect I do not like severe weather. However, I must TOTALLY AGREE with the excitement and humbleness that it gives me. I guess that is why I still go out in the middle of our worst storms even after my experiences. If you want raw power over a long period of time, try a major hurricane at CAT2 or better intensity. IT IS TOTALLY AWESOME!!! That is part of the reson I chase them if I can. One of the tornados I experienced was during Hurricane Alicia as the eyewall approached. INCREDIBLE!!! And I damn near got injured due to my STUPIDITY of being out in it!!!

Basically severe weathe is exactly what Nalora said-EXCITING AND HUMBLING and that is what makes it so AWESOME!!

I love Thunderstorms!!! Not only the sky flattering lightning or the loud shattering noise of the thunder, there is always something that draws me to the Thunderstorms. Last April, I remember sitting out infront of the towers at UW-Milwaukee...it was an awesome spectacle to watch! Driving in thunderstorms brings my adrenline up! As for the tornadoes...thankfully, have yet to live through one. I have been through Downdrafts and Microbursts, but no tornado.

Love Storms but Hate the Thunder

#18 Postby simplykristi » Tue May 13, 2003 10:24 pm

I love to watch storms... I don't like the sound of thunder, especially if it is realy loud. I am kind of sensitive to loud noises. I like to watch lightning that is off in the distance.

Ok I'll fess up ....I am pretty nervous when storms head my way.... I watched a tree fall on my neighbors house when I was little and it scared me silly....I thought my friend was dead....Almost hit by lightening caught in a flood with my newborn and a two year old while hubby was at Desert Storm So now, living on a wooded lot surrounded by huge trees I get nervous during a storm. Maybe it's that out of control feeling I get when there is a big storm. I am equally facinated by them .... I don't like being afraid therefore I try to understand.

It's a love/hate relationship isn't it? You love to watch its beauty and marvel at the awesome power, but you hate when it causes destruction.

I would love to get over my fear of lightning. Maybe it's from living in FL for 9 years. I'm always closing the blinds. I don't want to see it or hear it. I think it's the unpredictable nature of it that bothers me, and I'm kinda sensitive to loud noises like Kristi. If it wasn't for this fear, I would be a spotter in a heartbeat and out chasing it.
