Another stupid lawsuit...

#1 Postby WidreMann » Tue May 13, 2003 5:02 pm

Can you believe this? 2 million dollars in punitive damages? Because this twit didn't get some practically meaningless title all to herself? That there are people like this in the world really scares me.

I got the link from a very liberal board I lurk on. They thought it was absolutely ridiculous.

Well... I see both sides. As a former high school student who was #13 in a class of 127, I understand the frustration working your tail off and not getting the recognition.

If she actually was the #1 student in terms of GPA then she deserves to be validictorian.

ON THE OTHER HAND, if the one student had an unfair advantage they should take the unfair class out and calculate the GPA then.

I am not even sure what my class rank was in high school. Hopefully it was relatively high. I know it wasn't that low.

The culprit here is not the student, but the lawyer that actually agreed to accept the case. Lawyers are what is wrong with this world today as far as dumb lawsuits are concerned.

I'm familiar with this lawsuit since it's been on my local news for quite sometime. I have mixed feelings regarding this. When I first heard the story I felt the same way you did Widreman. However, what came out next after the verdict came in was that the school district decided to have the non-disabled student share the valedictorian distinction because they felt she had an unfair advantage. Hello? This is based on the school districts standards.

HOWEVER, I have a hard time dealing with a student suing a school district to get what they want. This is a horrible precedent...unfortunately, we've seen alot of those set in our courts.

I just think the whole deal is stupid. It's a practically meaningless title. Many schools don't pick valedictorians (such as mine) and colleges will look at SAT scores, class grades, what type of classes you take and extracurricular activities and interests. And that's just for college. Nobody's going to care in 30 years whether you wer a valedictorian or co-valedictorian. Regardless of who was supposed to have it, I just don't see why this battle was even fought. That is, unless this girl is some type of uptight twit. Which I guess must be the case if she is suing for millions of dollars in punitive damages because she couldn't get some stupid title. I'm even more angry now than I was before, that's how much this irks me.

1. Valedictorian is not a "title". It is a great honor. I didnt quite make valedictorian of my hs class, I was #6 and utterly disappointed. Also, colleges do look at class rank. Whoever told you otherwise is in all honesty a complete and utter moron. Look under acdemic scholarships and admissions, you have to be in a certain percentile to qualify. I can say for sure the University of Miami looks very closely at class rank

2. A simple solution would be to discount gym. In my hs, gym was not factored into class rank, neither was the AP classes

3. The highest GPA deserves the rank of valedictorian, period!

It still isn't an issue. She was fighting over a title, about who was exactly on top. If she had let it go, she would have been a mere co-valedictorian, which couldn't have possibly caused any problems. That's why I think this is so ridiculous. It's not like it was the difference between top 5% and top 50%; she was clearly right at the top. I mean, what's the difference between valedictorian and co-valedictorian? And is it worth a lawsuit and 2 million dollars in damages? No, it is not.

What happened to humility, integrity and character. What is being exhibited here is vanity and need for personal gratification - period. Like much of our society, the focus is on self. Don't you think she should be glad for the other two the were also selected and not bitter? As an employer, I would have a tough time hiring somebody who obviously has quite a chip on her shoulder and think the world has "done her wrong." What an attitude  Show some grace and character for pete's sake, not MEMEME! An now she will become an aspiring lawyer...just what we need...more leeches on the back of society. A sad time we have entered

Yeah, I see both of your points Widreman and Steve. It's not like she wouldn't have been considered "top of her class". Also the fact that now she's suing for money puts a totally different and ugly spin on the whole situation.
