Post Quality...A Suggested Read

#1 Postby DoctorHurricane2003 » Fri Aug 19, 2005 2:29 am

Recently I feel as if the quality of this board has gone downhill dramatically. It is fun to discuss the tropics, and it is fun to be able to analyze and share opinions with others. The problem comes when people make unfounded opinions. The most recent annoying topic: THIS SEASON IS OVER!!! and variations of it. I swear I have had it up to my neck with people deciding in MID AUGUST that the season is over. That is like saying an oak tree is going to stop growing when it pops out of its seed. Please use logic...please I am begging people.

Another annoying thing...people posting bovine fecal matter...a gazillion times. Can we PLEASE REFRAIN from posting:

STORM X IS A FISH....a gazillion times
STORM X IS GOING TO FLORIDA....a gazillion times
THE SEASON IS OVER.....a gazillion times
(Insert an Off-Topic random thought here).....a gazillion times
STORM X IS GOING TO EXPLODE!.....a gazillion times
STORM X IS DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!..........a gazillion times
THE SAL IS KILLING EVERYTHING.........a gazillion times
THE SAL IS NOTHING!..........a gazillion times

et al.

Its not the ACTUAL FORECASTS with ACTUAL REASONING AND ANALYZATION that's annoying. That's fine, continue that. It's the bovine fecal matter that is unfounded and with no logical analyzation that gets posted every 5 seconds by everyone and their best friend, then reposted in 67 new topics.

Next annoying thing....attacking people who don't think what you think. Example: OMG YOU STUPID DUMMY WHY ARE YOU SO STUPID STORM X ISN'T DOING THAT! (insert temper tantrum here)
^ Unacceptable. Please, for the love of God, and for the 84th time........STOP IT. Constructive Criticism = GOOD Attacking = BAD Is it THAT difficult? I could have sworn we learned this in KINDERGARTEN.

Okay I *think* I'm done...now excuse me while I go glue the hair I pulled out back to my head after reading several threads today.

P.S. USE THIS GREAT BOARD AS A ONE OF A KIND LEARNING OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN MORE ABOUT HURRICANES AND HOW THEY WORK!

ADDENDUM: Also, don't just read this and go 'good post' then go back to posting bovine fecal matter. If you ACTUALLY think this was needed and YOU were one of the ones posting bovine fecal matter....then STOP DOING IT.

Thanks! :)

P.S. you really forgot to stress about people using the term SAL. I have heard of it before but, this year is the most I have ever heard it in my entire life and it's like everyday and someone is posting the SAL picture. Thanks....

He actually mentioned Sal twice in his first post  Funny thing, the 8am TWD actually mentions leading edge of African dust cloud(SAL) affecting tropical wave near Leeward islands.

I use General Norman Schwartzkopf's best line during Desert Storm

BOVINE SCATOLOGY
------------------------------------------------------------

As for the quality of posts, I am learning toward the removal of ranks
based on posts. There is no doubt in my mind that there are people
here that post frequently, simply trying to obtain a higher level rank
(cat 1, cat 2, etc). This is clearly demonstrated with simple one or two
line thoughtless posts, with the author immediately replying to their
own post, sometimes 3-4 times.

If you want a "special status", why not donate $5-10 to storm2k to help
pay the bills instead of wasting the resources of the board just to
try and gain rank.

Agreed. This will be a more enjoyable experience for us all if we chose to use a little more restraint and self-control. Some good old-fashioned kindness and respect will go a long way, after all, except for trolls, we are here for the same reasons and share a common interest. (Smile)

One thing I think might be helpful as well would be for people to actually do a search before asking "what is SAL" or something to that effect.

It seems like the past few weeks there have been a lot of unneccesary threads of people asking for information (which is fine and encouraged) but fail to take 5 seconds and do a simple search.

Also another excellent tool is Google (or any other search engine).

Thanks for reminding me...I feel like I've been one of the ones doing this. So I'll refrain from the Talkin' Tropics forum, especially with all the severe weather happenings these days. If I post in the Talkin' Tropics forum I feel so debilitated as just to post that Storm X is dying or SAL too much or too much shear. If I concentrate on Severe while I have it perhaps I'll do a lot better (severe weather always interested me more than hurricanes).

Cheers! :D

This is a message board, the banter is what keeps it interesting. The forum you want is the Tropical Analysis forum. But it has only 3046 posts, this one has 260, 000. Its because its more interesting and more fun.

I don't mind getting flamed, I don't mind when people talk crap. In the words of Jim Rome - "Have a take and don't suck". I think some people are just a little thin-skinned and little too sensitive.

This board is mild with trollers and flamers compared to most others.

Keep Bringing it, it makes it interesting. My tracking map and protractor aren't doing it for me.

It's not just the term SAL! And it is not a bother if you post once in a while 'The SAL is a negative factor because (insert lengthy explanation/analyzation here)'

Its when people feel the need to post "THE SAL IS KILLING EVERYTHING" a gazillion times, and other things a gazillion times...and that's it....no explanation, etc. FYI...WE HEARD YOU AND EVERYONE ELSE THE FIRST TIME.

Secondly, this is a CIVILIZED message board. If you are all for attacking people and throwing temper tantrums I suggest you look somewhere else/find another hobby.

Another thing....

If you say you are going to ignore someone because you are feeding their need to be the center of attention...then guess what... IGNORE THEM... Don't continue to post there even after you said to ignore them! Jesus Christ

I think it is because, like people have also been saying, july has spoilied us in a way and the season seems to be going by so slow and compared to July we haven't had anything.

So are these the statisticts?

June: 2 Systems
July: 5 Systems
Augest: 3 Systems

Tropical Depressions: 1
Tropical Storms: 6
Cat 1 Hurricanes: 1
Cat 2 Hurricanes: 0
Cat 3 Hurricanes: 0
Cat 4 Hurricanes: 2
Cat 5 Hurricanes: 0

Are those it???

agreed....I second that statement. Bottom line - If the post looks dumb or uninteresting to you, don't read it!

And, for those saying it will be more fun for "all of us" - how do you know? Maybe I like reading the "dumb" posts.

It's a forum people, lighten up.

I think you're missing the point...if someone posts something in EVERY thread...its kind of hard to miss it, now isn't it?

Jim,

I think your forecasts have been great, especially a young amateur just trying it out. I would hate to see you hang it up sp soon. I don't think any of this was directed towards you...
