Northwest Jet Blows Tire While Landing In Detroit

ROMULUS, Mich. -- Four tires blew out on a Northwest Airlines jet Saturday while it was landing at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.
Flight 210 from Seattle was carrying 222 passengers when it landed at 3:53 p.m. EDT, Northwest spokeswoman Jennifer Bagdade said. No injuries were reported, she said.
Television reports showed the Boeing 757 stopped on a taxiway with buses lined up to transport the passengers to the terminal. Crews were using trucks to clear a runway of debris.
The incident occurred on the same day the airline's union mechanics walked off the job rather than take pay cuts and layoffs. Northwest, the nation's fourth-largest carrier, turned over its maintenance chores to replacement workers on Day 1 of the industry's first major walkout in seven years.
Bagdade said it was premature to speculate on the cause of the blowout.
"Issues like this occur from time to time at any airline, and at Northwest, we investigate any such operational issues," she said.
It was unknown whether the incident caused delays for other flights. An airport spokesman did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Three hurt as Northwest plane evacuated in Guam
Fri Aug 19, 2005 3:55 PM IST
GUAM (Reuters) - Three people were injured when the front landing gear of a Northwest Airlines plane carrying 318 passengers collapsed on landing at Guam international airport on Friday, officials said.
The Boeing 747 was evacuated shortly after arriving from Japan's Narita airport, said Rolenda Faasuamalie, a spokeswoman for Guam international airport.
"Northwest personnel activated an emergency slide and passengers were evacuated," she said.
There was no immediate statement from Northwest Airlines on the accident.
The Pacific island's airport was closed and all international arrivals diverted to the nearby Saipan island or the U.S. airforce base on Guam.
"Three people were injured. I don't know the extent of the injuries, but one passenger was taken to the naval hospital," Guam Governor Felix Camacho told reporters.
The passengers, most of them Japanese tourists, were being kept in a holding area. There were 13 flight attendants and three pilots on the flight.
"Thank God he's OK," said Elizabeth Medina, a Guam resident, after being informed that her husband had been evacuated safely from the plane.
"I was worried, I thought he was one of them (the injured passengers)."
