CONUS Landfalling Hurricanes 1950-2004

#1 Postby southerngale » Sun Aug 21, 2005 10:27 pm

I remember seeing this map when it was through 2002 and I was looking up some info and came across the latest one. I think it's pretty neat.

It would be interesting to see what that map would look like if it included the active period of the 20's, 30's, and 40's. !

Probably would be a big mess! :)

Obviously why they limited it to 1950 and beyond :D. Just would be a cluttered mess!

Thanks Southerngale, great chart, I saved it for reference. Interesting how one of the worst, Donna, had three landfalls, twice in Florida alone.

We forget too that it was no picnic here in the 50s-60s either, but Florida was a much less populated place, especially during the mean season.

I thought that andrew made landfall as a cat 4?
Andrew track map: that map says that it made landfall as a cat 3

& I thought that Camille made landfall as a cat 4 also
Camille Track map: But I guess it made land fall as a cat 5 or a cat 3 which ever

Andrew was a Cat 5 in Florida and Cat 3 in Louisiana, and the chart shows that. It was called at Cat 4 in Florida in 1992, but then it was raised officially to Cat 5 during the NHC re-assessment project, I think 10 years after the fact.

Carol 1953 in Maine - is that correct? I thought Carol was 1954 (listed too).

Camille made landfall as a very powerful Cat 5, if you live in south MS. your reminded of that fact every year on the anniversary of her arrival.

That gap between Charley and Gladys is disturbing at the least.

And Elena and Flossie.

We've been extremely lucky in the past 55 years.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong... Hurricane Georges in 1998 which struck the Mississippi coast was a category 2 hurricane correct?
The chart shows it as a category 1. I thought the landfall intensity was estimated to be 100 mph, category 2 status. Thanks to anyone who can confirm this or correct me.

I just went to the TPC archives and looked up the tropical cyclone report of hurricane Georges in 1998. It shows landfall intensity of 90 knots or 105 mph... definitely a category 2 hurricane, along with a minimum central pressure of 964 mb.

Unfortunately the chart/poster is erroneous on the hurricane intensity of Georges along the MS coast.... Otherwise I enjoy the chart very much and it shows how vulnerable ALL of us along the US coast really are.
