NHC slightly incorrect...

#1 Postby hurricanetrack » Mon Aug 22, 2005 3:54 pm

From the 5pm discussion on TD #11:

SHOULD THE DEPRESSION BECOME
A TROPICAL STORM TODAY...IT WOULD BE THE EARLIEST FORMATION OF A
SEASON'S 11TH STORM ON RECORD.

Just a minor technical note: the "J" storm would be the 10th named storm. Not the 11th. But what's a named storm here and there between friends?

I'm sure they know it's the 10th letter in the alphabet... they just typed 11 cos this is TD11.

Maybe there seriously thinking of upgrading tropical depression 10 to a tropical storm. Heck it did have some purple wind flags on quickscats=35 to 40 knot winds. So it would not be out of this world.

I doubt it... if there was a chance of them doing that, it wouldn't have be discontinued after less than 24 hours.

In the 5pm Discussion...

"...CORRECTED FOR POTENTIAL EARLIEST 10TH... NOT 11TH... STORM"

I answered your question in the other thread too, but it's Colin Farrell.

And I dunno why they call it an avatar... its one of the great mysteries of the internet forum. (Probably not, actually. But now I'm curious to find an answer.) 8-)

Well, I saw the answer to the avatar question on Jeopardy once. And here's a definition I could find.

n 1: a new personification of a familiar idea; "the embodiment of hope"; "the incarnation of evil"; "the very avatar of cunning" [syn: embodiment, incarnation] 2: the manifestation of a Hindu deity (especially Vishnu) in human or superhuman or animal form; "the Buddha is considered an avatar of the god Vishnu"

So, it's of Hindu descent I believe and it was was just one day used to personify us online. just a guess...yes im off topic but i thought it to be interesting.

I believe it was a term used in virtual reality games or something... and it got associated with forums through that, I think.

Being a huge Jeopardy fan, I certainly remember that. I believe it was during the UTOC (Ultimate Tournament of Champions). It was one of the few times I got a Final Jeopardy clue correct, haha.
