heck i work at a YMCA, some of our members were pissed when we shut the doors around 3 PM on August 13th for Charley in Orlando, I was the last one out and two people were trying to come in when i was leaving and wanted to cancel their memberships because we were closing...i nicely rolled my eyes at them and went home

Yikes. I don't think you can realistically compare Publix vs. Wal-Mart. We don't have Publix in Louisiana, but I shop at them religiously when I'm in Florida. Wal-Mart? God, I try not to step foot in those places, especially the Super, Mega and Colossal ones. I'm not some pseudo-sophisticate, but I don't enjoy my shopping experience at Walmart and never have. I'll actually go to K-Mart if I need some cheap whatever, but I ain't going in a Walmart. I don't want my packages checked after they've already been paid for like I'm a token checkpoint-YT in an airport line when I don't look like a terrorist. And I don't want to stand in line for 30 minutes only to be greeted by mostly rude cashiers.

On the other hand, I can find pretty much what I want at Publix. It ain't Whole Foods, but they do a good job of mixing store-brand stuff with competitive American stuff and upscale items.

Folks here in The Woodlands are rather peeved b/c they promised a 60ft. natural tree barrier around the new (and now THIRD) Wal-Mart going-up.

They mowed them all down. It's an eyesore, especially here where every retail center has a tree buffer. And it's kinda too late to fix the problem now. grrrr.

I like HEB in TX and Publix in FL.

Does Publix still use "where shopping is a pleasure?"

I don't believe Florida's west coast has much to worry about with this one. Maybe some rain, but that's about it. If I was in Texas, I would be watching it closely.

I don't think 10L will be a problem for us though. Our problems usually start in mid-September and last through October.

The baggers get upset if i start to help them. They don't move fast enough for a former "New Yorker" like me. All in All, the folks who work for Publix are very courteous.

I just started working at Publix in the deli(Tequesta). What happened w/ them closing the doors on the customers.? I seem to remember my brother (works for Publix in Lake Park) getting out by 1:00 on the day of either Francis or Jeanne, I cant remember. I guess I"ll have to ask about their "storm policy" when I go in to work tonite.
