Hurricane Andrew 13 years later

#1 Postby Jim Cantore » Tue Aug 23, 2005 10:45 am

as you know tommorow is August 24th the 13th Anniversary of Hurricane Andrew's rampage through South Florida as a catagory 4 storm

Andrew was the costliest natural disaster in U.S history cause around the area of $30 billion in damage

on August 24th 2002 on the 10 year anniversary of his landfall and after much reasearch Andrew was upgraded to a Catagory 5.

For all the damage the death toll wasnt even 30 people thanks to early warning. If there was no warning thousonds would have perished.

Andrew struggled to get its act together early on. Unfavorable conditions hampered him. it remained weak.

Eventually Andrew shot back to the west into more favorable conditions and began rapid strengthing and the rest is history.

Andrew slowly weakened to a cat 3 as it crossed the Florida everglades caused damage to the ecosyestem that has yet to recover. Andrew also caused extensive damage in Naples.

Andrew moved into the Gulf of Mexico where it struck the Louisana coast as a catagory 4 hurricane.

Andrews worst damage was in the Homestead/Florida City area south of Miami.

Even the national hurricane center felt the effects as the doppler radar fell off the roof.

Some victims of this storms have yet to recover.

these days Andrew is the first hurricane that comes to mind when we think of small monster hurricanes

Andrews lowest central Pressure was 922 Millabars which is a bit high for a catagory 5 storm

Gusts to over 160mph where felt all the way in Miami.

It may not be the worst hurricane top ever hit the U.S but its no doubt the most well known.

Sorry, but Andrew hit Louisiana as a 3 not a 4. But, I am reflecting back on Andrew. 13 years that just seemed to fly by. R.I.P. to all those who died as result of Andrew.

I remember the winds howling soo freakin loud it was almost insane but at least in my local area I would guess the winds were at most 160mph.

Where did you live during Andrew, Ricky? There was nowhere near 160mph winds reported in Miramar during Andrew.

The official report had maximum winds in an area very close to the center only i.e. Homestead, Cutler Ridge, Perrine, etc....Once you got North of Kendall the winds dropped off dramatically. I have family that lived in Pembroke Pines at the time who are still wondering what the big deal was ;)

even though my family and I were in the worst, I still consider myself lucky too....we all survived albeit a few scrapes and bruises but all were in one piece thank goodness.
