JQ, I would assume and very much hope they use both radars, advance technology and the 'convection weather radar' are two different things. :D

Yes indeed, Jonathan. I've always said I would hate to be a meteorologist, forecaster or weather enthusiast out in the Rocky Mountain states.

A Couple of Points

one difficulty in tornado forecasting and tracking is that the precise modes and parameters for tornado formation are not that well known from a mathematical standpoint. Add to that the fact that there are modes of tornado formation that do NOT involve supercells and mesocyclones and you have a can of worms. As far as terrain blocking on radar, we have not yet discovered a method by which a beam of electromagnetic energy can be made to pass through solid rock both going out to and coming back from a target.

I would like to be a meteorologist anywhere, but radars are not as "exciting" as they are in the middle and eastern United States. :)
