I always thought a Category 1 hurricane did not have an eye and earlier today one of the weather guys on tv said something to this effect. However, now we are all watching Katrina's eye and eagerly awaiting its arrival onshore. (So she can be gone........gone.... gone like a freight train.....)
Anyway, what's the story with Category 1 storms and eyes? Do they have eyes like their more intense relations?
By the way, Katrina might be a 1, but she's packing quite a wallop here in my neighborhood in Boca Raton. We have trees down and the wind is singing a country tune outside right now.

Yes, I believe a cat 1 storm can have an eye, eye wall, etc. In fact, and eye typically appears about when hurricane "force" is reached., from what I've read.
As you guys note, it typically isn't going to be the classic eye we see in a stronger storm--more ragged, convection not as tight, no stadium effect, and so on...but definitely can happen.

Right, Franklin had an eye when he was upgraded to a depression officially. The intensity of the storm does not dictate whether or not it has an eye, but almost all healthy hurricanes at cat. 2 or higher have eyes, and most category 1 hurricanes do too. Tropical storms often have eyes and at least partial eyewalls well before they reach hurricane strength, but they are usually not clear on satellite. Even now, Katrina has an eye in the sense that no rain is falling inside, but no clear eye on satellite. If the hurricane had more time to intensify, we would definitely see a clear eye develop.

Franklin most certainly did not have an eye when it was a TD. It had a dry spot the way the circulation was curling around.

That is right I remember the weather channel was saying that it was barly even a TD and it has a very dis organized circulation with a dry spot in the middle it was like an oval I remeber and if it had an eye it would of been weird and extrodanary
