no damage. I am on a causeway

we are now in the southern reaches of the eye

Yeah, I saw that strong band rotating in on you ... figured you'd be getting close to hurricane force there, given the nice fetch over the bay.

Please watch out for falling trees - they seem to be the main life-threatening issues at this point... :(

I wouldn't worry. Unless he's in one of the really old shacks, Derek is in a solidly built structure. FG Walton Smith had a thing for building really solid. :-)

Right now, dead calm. Waiting for the backside of the eyewall to get here.

Had sustained winds to 69 m.p.h. with gusts of 85 m.p.h. Am in the eye now, though the extreme southern portions

Hope your having a blast Derek, I'd love to be out there. Not to say its safe to be out there, but I've only been able to observe the last 2 hurricanes in Pensacola from a window for fear of being hit with flying debris. Theres nothing better to build your respect for mother nature then to expirence her first hand. Stay put too, it looks like you have quite a few more hours of this. Everyone stay safe.

Derek, I am amazed you still have power. Fortuantely alot of S Fl power is underground. Probably only a matter of time! Do you have back up power, we will need all the pros when this gets to the gulf!

Sounds exciting DO. Stay safe. The way Katrina came in and the way she's drifting now made it far more interesting for Miami and points South. Looks like a long night with lots of squalls on the backside too. It should stay interesting if she continues to track south of due west.

No reports of damage on the main campus either that I know of, which is a little farther south and inland a bit from RSMAS. Last I checked the most damage was some tree limbs down...power is still up.

Miami and coconut grove must be getting pounded. Strong convection has been on the south side for a while.
