well we made it
been a long night....just went outside to survey the damage...some trees down and branches, etc. I will tell you what...I will never take a cat. 1 lightly again....glad it's over.

Glad you're okay - I put on my chicken suit and drove up US 27 to Sebring about lunch time yesterday (when an eye seemed to be forming - it did). Lord willing I'll return to Broward early Saturday morning.
I'm sure it was a very long night for yourself and eveyone down there - as you said, I think everyone has learned respect for even a Category 1 hurricane!

Thanks for your kind offer (I forgot to check my mail when logging on earlier) - I'm staying next to St. Catherine's (nice to go to Mass this morning - I needed it after yesterday)!

P.S. In reference to that - my guardian angel was with me in a big way yesterday - when I approached the traffic light for SR66 and US27, it turned yellow, and, I guess I was just tired at that point (not having slept well at all on Wednesday night), and misjudged the light, applied my brakes too quickly, and, in the rain, slid almost all the way through the red light! Thank the Lord that the 18-wheeler going westbound on 66 noticed my problem before he started moving!!

Haven't been in that place in years. I worked there for awhile when I was a kid. It was one of the two Grand hotels in this area and catered to northeners with lots and lots of money. A lady asked me for her safe box one evening before dinner. She stood at the desk, pulled out a 36 inch rope of sapphires, a diamond encrusted watch, a pave diamond buttterfly broach and several large diamond rings and donned them for dinner. I stood watching her in awe.

Yes, from what I hear (and read from those 1920's Highlands County newspaper images framed in the lobby) it was that kind of place (similar to the Lakeside Inn in Mount Dora), though on my last visit in May (and now), a number of contractors from out of state are staying here during the Hurricane Charley rebuilding process, so it's more on a normal level nowdays.
The often play recorded 1940's big band music in the lobby, and it's easy to imagine Humphrey Bogart walking in the front door!
Despite the upgrades, the hotel is almost 90 years old, so, not as nice in some way as the newer chain hotels, for certain, but, it's still nice.
I first stayed here in 1991, and at that time the third floor rooms were still without air conditioning - that has since been upgraded.
Fortunately, the entire place now has sprinklers - since it's made mostly of Florida pine and plaster, that's a relief!
Glad they have a AAA rate (I should join AARP for that rate),
