Notice that both of these guys seemed to have suffered some hair loss. Probably comes with the job.

Don't tell Jim Cantore!

Well, one good thing about being a baldy - it saves lots of time in the morning (my head's too bumpy for that - much to the happiness of my barber, I'm sure)!!

I'm more interested in the worry lines on his face. Believe me he knows what's up. A storm that went further south than forecast and remained stronger than forecast....

Something just occured to me. Not only are they responsible for the "official" forecasts with peoples' lives in the balance, but imagine having to do that working in basically a "glass box" studio setting with reporters, etc., constantly in your face taking photos, etc.

*no pressure*

whew!

Yes, it was the same way when I worked at the old NHC - during Hurricane Elena's many stationary hours just offshore Tampa Bay (1985), a number of reporters were camped out in the operational area for several days (yes, days), and more than once one or two who came to know us would politely look over someone's shoulder, and ask questions about the nature of our work.

At one point, I was hand-plotting weather observations, and felt someone looking over my shoulder, and to my surprise found it was the local NBC anchorwoman. A day or so later, then-Florida Governor Bob Graham came to direct state operations from our office, and worked with us for at least 24 hours, so, it's true what you said - there is a certain pressure to this situation at all times, since you find that you are the news, and to this day, no matter the topic, my heart goes out to those in the media spotlight - not easy having your life on public display!

I've never seen a picture of Avila and in my mind he was younger and had dark hair! Don't know why I had that vision of him like that! Just goes to show you what your imagination does!

No, he's always been without much hair, though as you said it was darker years ago.

I like to see the old pros in when the going gets rough.
Would not trust an intern that position.

I've tried to invision every NHC forecaster and I've failed miserably... I've seen pictures of Avila before though.
