"Hurricane Katrina Update

August 26, 12:50 PM - Information received this hour from the National Hurricane Center indicates that Hurricane Katrina’s likely path could take it to Mobile, Alabama, or even further west. As noted previously, any prediction of the path of the storm is subject to significant change over the next hours and days.

At 4 p.m. today Representative Sansom and I will be meeting with Emergency Operations personnel and other local officials. It is our understanding that, at that time, we will be informed about possible evacuation plans, shelter openings, and any closings of public offices and activities.

Superintendent Rogers from Santa Rosa County and I just talked by telephone in order to coordinate plans for our two neighboring school districts. Like Okaloosa County, Santa Rosa will make decisions at 4 p.m. today.

"EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. - Hurricane Condition Four has been declared at Eglin by the commander as of 6 a.m. today because of the threat of Hurricane Katrina.

Hurricane Condition Four means destructive winds of 58 MPH or greater are possible within 72 hours.

Eglin is taking precautions now because of the long lead time needed for hurricane preparation.

Eglin officials also remind people to monitor television or radio broadcasts for the National Hurricane Center�s latest forecast and find storm preparation information on http://www.eglin.af.mil"

Here in Pensacola area... Escambia county officials have declared a state of emergency for Escambia county. Plans are to activate the county EOC (emergency operations center) tomorrow at 1300, but they can open sooner if Katrina pulls a fast one.

Have not heard what we're doing yet here aboard NAS Pensacola. Will post if I hear something.

Nothing here yet. I think after the 5PM NHC track shift is out we'll hear some serious noise around here. If Katrina was already a Cat 3 or 4 right now, more people would be talking about it. Most of us here know that's not only possible, but probable.

You know - the bad part about that - as it always seems to be for weekend storms - everyone gets away from tv/radio/internet to a degree on the weekend . . .

Then they get into panic mode when someone mentions it in the grocery store, etc.

If they are going to call it, call it before 5:00 Friday afternoon!!
