No Heroes Please

#1 Postby sweetpea » Sat Aug 27, 2005 12:17 am

This is a beautiful storm. Everyone on this board loves storms and tracking them. But this is one that if it is headed your way you need to leave. This one has taken 7 lives already and will definitely take more. So please don't be a hero. If it is headed your way take your families and get out. I will say prayers tonite for everyone and hope that everyone leaves. Just be safe everyone. Debbie

I am on vacation this week and was thinking of going to biloxi. I have been through many Hurricanes and actually enjoy them in safe buildings. but I think this one I will avoid. CNN can do the watching for me

If she comes this way, I'll be staying - but I'm well boarded, well above sea level (32 feet), in a solid home that's been in place since 1943, and there are no pine trees anywhere near by. No doubt, though, I won't be doing anything heroic. Hunkered Down, I believe, is the phrase that will best describe my intention...

If Katrina comes here I will have to report to work. My place of employment is about 1 mile from the Gulf of Mexico and it sits on the "Back Bay" of Biloxi. We literally go out by the water and eat our lunch. I'm alittle nervous about having to report to work but it is the profession I chose. I have to take the good with the bad. If I avoid phone calls this weekend and they have a call back and I evacuate instead of going to work, I will face termination. I'm really nervous about this because I'm a single mother and I will have to kiss my children goodbye as they will evacuate with a good friend of mine who has so graciously offered her assistance to help me with my children. I pray that the storm doesnt come here but I dont wish it on anyone else. So far the feeling in the Biloxi area is very calm... tomorrow may be a different scenario I fear. God speed to all tonight who have the potential to be impacted by this ferocious storm!!

Then, you must work in the "big" building right across the street from my house...

Nope - not that one... but just a few miles east on the bay - the State Building (driver's license, etc). Used to be the old Howard Memorial Hospital back in my younger days!! VA is seemingly a very strong building from everything I've seen. In fact, they probably don't build 'em like that anymore!!

Yes Ixolib I have no concerns for my safety there. There is alot of metal and brick in that building and they have so many buildings that are conjoined so if there is a problem with one part of the hospital we can move to another part of the hospital. Usually when hurricanes are threatening our area, the docs try to discharge as many patients that they can. Naturally some patients can not be discharged due to the nature of their illness. Some patients elect to leave on their own even if it is against the doctors advice or are transported to hospitals further inland either by ambulance or one of our med vans. Unfortunately there are many patients who are to unstable to be moved (ie, ICU patients). I work in the ER and we have to keep that open no matter what. The psychiatric patients from the Gulfport VA are moved to the Biloxi VA and require very close monitoring since we dont have as good of psychiatric facilities that the Gulfport VA does. Most of our nursing home patients stay unless a family member decides to check them out and care for them on their own. For the nursing home patients that stay we move them into interior hallways... So it is a really fine tuned evacuation that goes on there and a well oiled machine. However, it does require almost full staffing which means if you dont show up you will be given an AWOL which could mean a permanent discharge from your assigned duty....

New Orleans on Alert

#11 Postby vortex100 » Sat Aug 27, 2005 3:21 am

If the latest GFS model is correct, this looks like a "worse case senario" for New Orleans. Continued intensification as the center moves into southeastern Louisiana, with violent northeasterly flow and storm surge emptying Lake Pontchartrain into the city. Evacuations should begin later today or early tomorrow. There will be a lot of people to move. However, the storm track could still shift westward again. This is going to be a mess.

If it pulls a more Camille-like track, N.O. won't be as greatly impacted. But, a few more miles to the west, and landfall a little more south (perhaps out of Breton Sound), with a SE to NW trajectory - then all bets are off...
