WXMAN57...I ECHO...in the strongest possible way...your concern.
If Kat stays on track as forecasted...it will traverse the Gulf Loop Current with some extremely high oceanic heat content. Unless some miracle of dry air creeps in...or it comes inland during the downside of an ERC...this will be a Cat4...a strong cat 4 and a cat 5 is a possibility if it comes in on the upside of an ERC.
If you have family in NOLA...call them and get them out now. Better safe than sorry. If you are anywhere along the SELA...MS...or AL gulf coast...get out now. If you are in the panhandle of Florida...batten down the hatches and get everything ready so that you can get out on a moments notice.
I have already called a member of my church who is from NOLA and still has family there. She said they had told her last night that they weren't worried because of what the OEM had said. I told her to wake them up and get them out. There will be mass chaos in about 12 hours if the track doesn't change...and probably still.

Yes I know. But currently people in Hammond would be on the 'better' side of the storm. Jackson got quite the smack from Camille and if Katrina were to behave in a similar fashion, it would not be pretty up there either.

Shelter in Orlando
Hey, my husband and I have a vacant studio apartment below our house that I'd be willing to give a couple (or possibly a 3-person family, although it'd be crowded) from New Orleans through the end of the week.
No charge. Just hop that plane mentioned above. We'll pick you up at the airport if you don't want to rent a car.
(It's one small thing I can do for one family, but at least that's something I can do. Thanks for mentioning Orlando, LC. It gave me the idea.)
We work in Christian ministry and are safe people. Email kimvsmith@gmail.com for my phone number and we'll talk.
Kim
(This is dependent on my husband agreeing to my impulse, of course. But contact me if we could help you.)

They won't. Homless and the poor (both with no real transportation or $$$ to get out) would account for a majority of the deaths in Katrina if she does indeed come in just to the west of NOLA. People don't think we could see at least 500-1,000 deaths possibly from this storm IF it took the current NOLA track. Think again.

Exactly. Maybe more. Complacency has really set in here. Some people I've talked to are not planning to leave. I will leave this evening.

If you were in better standing could you pray that the hurricane weakens? Not sure how that works.

I can't imagine why anyone would not be leaving now if they live in NO...look at the damage Katrina did in So. Florida...that will look like child's play compared to the destruction there will be in NO if it takes a direct hit.
If Katrina stays on track and is headed straight for NO and I see someone on TV from that area saying they are going to have a party and ride it out I swear I will scream!
